Description

(No Model.)
A. W. SAWYER.
SLEEVE HOLDER. I No. 431,125. Patented July 1, 1890.
WJTNEEEIFI JNXEVTUHI I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW \V. SAWYER, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
SLEEVE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,125, dated July 1, 1890.
Application filed January 13 1890. Serial No. 336,776. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANDREW WV. SAWYER, of the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sleeve-Holders; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention has reference to an improvement in devices for holding the sleeves of the shirt while a coat is being drawn over the same, or the sleeves of a coat while drawing on an overcoat.
The invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction of the device, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
Figure 1 is a top view of the device showing the clamping-slide drawn out. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3is a side view of the device showing the clamping slide pushed in to secure the device. Fig. 4 is-a view of the reverse side. Fig. 5 is a side View of the device provided with a metallic loop. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the device provided with a metallic loop.
Similar numbers of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout.
The device consists in a strip of sheet metal having at one end the slotted loop 8, immediately back of which are the lips 9, which are bent at right angles to the strip to form guides. Farther back the clamps 10 are formed in one piece with the strip of metal. Beyond these clamps 10 at 11 the strip of metal is bent over, and this bend 11 is either slotted to receive the straps 12 or formed into an eye to receive the ends of the metal strap 13, as is shown in Figs. 5 and 6. The bent over portion of the metal strip is provided near the bend with the guides 14, and at the forward end the strip is bent at right angle to form the lip 15,which enters the slot in the loop 8.
The clamping-slide 16 consists of a strip of sheet metal having the hand-hold 17 at one end, the strips 18 near the other end, and the forward-projecting end 19.
The main strip of sheet metal by suitable dies is made complete and ready for bending,
and when bent or doubled the flexible strap 12 is inserted into the transverse slot at the bend 11. The clamps 10, having their ends serrated, are now bent over the upper portion of the strip of sheet metal. The ends pass through the holes 20 and enter the material of the flexible strap 12, thus securing the ends of the loop formed of the strap 12. The lips 9 are turned up to form guides for the forward end of the main strip of metal. The clamping-strip 16 is now laid on the main strip. The guides 14 are bent over the clampingstrip, as is shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. Thestrips 18 are now bent over the doubled main strip and the device is completed.
In the modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the clamps 10 are dispensed with and the metal loop is pivotally secured in the eye formed in bending the main strip.
With the flexible loop orstrap 12 the same can be readily bent under the device to reduce the length of the device, and in the construction shown in the modified form the metal loop can be as readily swung under the device for the same purpose.
When the device is to be used, the edge of the garment is inserted, as is shown in Fig. 2. The clamping-slide 16 is now pushed forward and the garment is secured in the slot of the loop 8, as is shown in Fig. 3. A finger is inserted in the loop and the garment drawn into the sleeve. By drawing back the clamp ing-slide the garment is released.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A sleeve-holder consisting in a strip of metal having a slotted loop formed in one end and a clamping lip at the other end adapted to enter the slot of the loop, the strip being bent double and having a loop secured in the bent and doubled end, and a clampingslide havinglaterally-proj ectin g strips formed in one piece with the slide bent over the doubled strip constructed to force the lip of one end of the doubled strip into the slot in the loop of the opposite end to secure the fabric, as described.
2. Inasleeve-holder, the combination, with the loop 8, the lips 9, the clamps 10, the guides 14, and the lip 15, stampedwith the slots and hqles, 0f the clamping-slide 16, provided with d the metal loop 13, pivoted in the bent end 11 the strips 18, and the strap 12, secured by the of the double strip constructed to fold the clamps 10, as described. 100p under the sleeve-holder, as described.
3. The combination, in a sleeve-holder with ANDREWV W. SAWYER. 5 the bent and doubled strip of metal having Witnesses:
the slotted loop 8 at one end and the lip 15 at J. A. MILLER, J r.,
the other end, and the clamping-slide 16, of M. F. BLIGH.
