F. W. OSTROM. CUTTING'MEGHANISM FOR BUTTON HOLE SEWING MACHINES.
No. 430,786. Patented June 24, 1890.
- UNITED Srarns arr-tar tries FREELAND W. OSTROM, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE XVHEELER & WVILSON MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CUTTING MECHANlSlVl FOR BUTTON-HOLE SEWiNG WiAGt-HNES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,786, dated June 24:, 1890.
Application filed December 14,1888. Serial N0x 293,690. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREELAND W. OSTROM, of Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Cutting Mechanism for Button-l-Iole-Stitching Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters and figures on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to improve the mechanism described in United States Patent No. 367,815, granted to me, dated July 26, 1887, to which reference may be had. In the patent therein described the adjustment for the cutterbar with relation to the cloth- -clamp holding the cloth containing the but ton-hole to be stitched is obtained by means of eccentric bearings in which the cutter-bar reciprocates. In this my present invention, instead of securing the blade or cutter directly to the lower end of the cutter-bar,1 have provided the latter at its lower end with a web upon which is mounted an independent blade-holder to which the blade is attached, the said blade-holder being made adjustable on the said web laterally with relation to the cutter-bar, so as to place the blade connected with the said holder in central position with relation to the stitching constituting the sides of the button-hole. D
Figure 1 is a partial side elevation of the forward part of a sewing-machine of wellknown construction with my improvement added thereto; Fig. 2, a right-hand end elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows the throat-plate detached. Fig. at is an under side View of the throat-plate. Fig. 5 shows an enlarged portion of the bar with the holder and plate attached thereto. Fig. 6 is a detail showing the web, and Fig. 7 is a detail showing the blade with its hole to fit one of the studs.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the bed or cloth plate of the machine; A,part of the overhanging arm; A the needle-bar actuating rock-shaft; A", its arm; A a link; A, a needle-bar; B, a rotary hook or device to engage the loop of needle-thread b, a blade; C 0, parts of a cloth-carrying clamp, the parts so designated being common to the patened to be adjusted on the web in a straight out referred to, wherein they are designated by like letters;
The arm 0' of the cloth-clamping mechanism hasattached to its forward end the usual slotted frame or foot (marked a) through which the needle 0. descends when stitching the button-hole, the said foot resting upon the material laid upon the upper side of the member 0 of the cloth-clamp.
The throat-plate 0 of the machine, having the needle hole c and a cutting-blade f and spring-plates c are all as in the patent referred to, where they are designated by like letters. Herein the bar d is provided at its lower end with a web or plate d, which, as represented, is secured to the bar cl by a screw (1 a part of the web or plate entering a vertical slot at the lower end of the bar cl. This web or plate, as represented, has at one side a groove 2, which receives in it a projection 3 of a holder 6, the holder being secured to the said web by a screw 4, the shank of which is extended through a slot 5 (see Fig. 6) in the web d, so that the said holder may be adjusted laterally atright angles to the longitudinal center of the bar d when it is desired to change the position of the bladeb with re lation to the opening in .the foot a and with relation to the stitching constituting the sides of the button-hole, the stitching taking place within the said foot a.
The holder, as represented herein, has a clamping-block (1 which is secured to the holder by means of a screw 6. The holder, as shown, has also two guiding-studs '7 8, one of which enters a hole 1) of the blade I) when the blade is applied to the holder.
The clamping-plate (Z is acted upon by the screw 6 when the latter is turned in it, thus serving to firmly secure the plate to the holder. The web d, connected to the lower end of the cutter-bar exactly at right angles to the bladeholder and the attached blade, serves as a guide upon or along which the said blade holder may be quickly moved in a straight line. When it is desired to adjust the blade into central position, and when adjusting the positionof the blade, it is not unclamped on the holder, but the blade-holder is simply loos- ICO line at right angles to the length of the cutting-edge. of the blade, the web preventing any twisting or turning aside 0f the bladeholder.
I claim- In a bi1tt0nhole-stitching machine, the coinbination, with a cloth-elamp, the verticallyreciprocating cutter-bar, and the web connected to its lower end, of a blade and independent blade-holder adjustably secured to the said web, the said blade-holder, with the blade connected thereto, being adjustable together laterally with relation to the said cut-
