SEWING-MACHINE FOR STITCHING AND CUTTING BUTTON-HOLES.

Be it known that I, FREELAND W. OSTROM,
of Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, State of- Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Sewing-Machines forStitching and Cutting Button-Holes, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings,is a specificatiomlike letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention is an improvement on that described in United'States Patent No. 439,680, dated November 4, 1890.
The machine described in said patent has a blade carried by a cutter-bar parallel to the needle-bar, and to avoid interfering with the needle-bar during the stitching operation the cutter-bar is provided with means whereby when the cutter is not to operate the bar is elevated. and partially rotated to turn the blade aside out of the path of movement of theneedlebar and needle; but when the blade is to out a button-hole in the material, then the cutter-bar in its downward movement is partially rotated to thus place the cuttingedge of the blade centrally with relation to the work-clamp and to the rows of stitching, as preferably the blade will descend after the stitches have been made to constitute the worked edges for the button-hole. The blade with one operation cuts the button-hole for its entire length. In some instances, to avoid contact of the blade with the needle-bar, the latter has been grooved longitudinally at one side to receive the front end of the'cutter.
Figure 1 in front elevation represents a sufficient portion of a button-hole sewing-machine with my improvements added to enable the same to be understood. Fig. 2 is a left-hand side view of the machine shown in Fig. 1.

Preferably the time at which the cutter shall actwill be governed or controlled by some device moved by the workclamp or feeding device as provided for in said patent. To avoid oscillating the cutterbar and its blade, as described in said patent, I have provided the overhanging arm or head of the machine with cutter-bar bearings which are inclined with relation to the vertical plane in which the needle-bar reciprocates, as thereby I am enabled to support the cutter in a diagonal position with relation to the needlebar.
In the machine in which my invention is herein embodiedI have shown the usual cars at the head of the overhanging arm as extended, as represented in Fig. lat the left, and through these cars I have made diagonal holes for the reception of the bearings e e, in which moves the cutter-bar 6', so that the said bar occupies a diagonal position with relation to the needle-bar, as shown.
The cutter -bar has clamped adj ustably upon it a block or collar e provided with a stud e (represented by dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2,) the inner end of which stud entersa guide slot or way 6 made in alug e attached to or forming part of the overhanging arm, the said guideway being substantially parallel to the longitudinal center of the cutterbar. The stud e is embraced by the bifurcated end of the armb of the cutter-bar-actuatin g rock-shaft, and when the said rock-shaft is moved, as provided for in the said patent, to depress the said arm the cutter-bar will be thrown down and the blade, to be described, carried thereby will cut the button-hole.- It will also be obvious that the cutter-bar is raised as the arm 6 is lowered. By loosening the screw tin the block or collar 0 the cutterbar may be raised or loweredand turned more or less about its center, in order to bring the blade gin just the proper alignmentwith relation to the slot in the button-hole clamp and with relation to the material held in the clamp. The lower end of the cutter-bar, as shown, is provided with a web or flat part attached thereto by a suitable screw 2. This web has in its face a groove, which, as repre sented, receives a fin 5, projecting from an upright part 30f the blade-holder g, having cheek-pieces under the control of a screw 4, by which to cause the cheeks to clamp the blade g. The Web 1'' is slotted, so that the screw f passes through it, as represented by dotted lines, so that the blade-holder may be adjusted laterally with relation to the longitudinal center of the Work-clamp or so that the blade may be adjusted exactly central with relation to the throat of the work-clamp. The shape of the blade and the location of the cutter-bar are such that the bar, having only a movement of reciprocation in a right line, may be thrown down or depressed just when the button-hole is to be cut and Without any possibility of interfering with the movement of or contacting with the needle or needle-bar.
I claim- A Work-clamp, a needle-bar and needle, a cutter-bar mounted in a diagonal or inclined position with relation to the needle-bar, a blade carried by the said cutter-bar, an adj ustable collar applied to the said cutter-bar and havinga stud, an actuating device to act upon said stud,and thereby reciprocate the cutter-bar, and a guideway for the said stud, the said guideway being parallel, or substan- 3c tially so, to the longitudinal center of the cutter-bar, to operate substantially asdescribed.
