\VILLIAM F. SMITH, OF LEOMINSTER, ASSIGNOR TO THE UNION DESK COMPANY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
COVERED TOP FOR DESKS, TABLES, 80G.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,092, dated June 10, 1890.
Application filed February 9,1888- Serial No. 263,506. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM F. SMITH, of Leominster, in the county of WVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Oovered Top for Desks, Tables, &c., of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.
Tops, &c., of desks and tables, as well known, have a covering of cloth, leather, or other suitable sheet material, which is cemented thereto and its edges covered and concealed with a strip of gimp, leather, braid, or such like. Coverings thus secured to be removed must be torn off and thus destroyed, and to be cleaned when soiled or defaced with ink, 850., must be cleansed on the top, obviously in many instances not possible without injury to the covering or to its cementing substance, and in all instances resulting in most imperfect results.
This invention relates to securing coverings to tops of desks and tables; and its object is to secure them in a manner enabling glue or other cement or adhesive material, as also the strip of gimp or such like, to be both dispensed with and the coverings to be readily removed for being cleansed, or for other purposes, and to be replaced, and all without injury or d-efacement Under this invention the covered desk or table top is made of ;a frame grooved at its inner edge and a panel to fill said frame, and which at its edge is tongued, corresponding with and to fit the groove of the frame, and on its upper side and contiguous to the inner edge of the frame is grooved, in combination with a sheet of cloth, leather, or other suitable material covering said panel and lying within its groove, and a strip or strips of wood or other suitable material in suitable lengths shaped to fit and to be entered into the groove of the panel, and thereby to bind and secure the covering therein and to the panel, all substantially as hereinafter described.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the covered desk or table top of this invention is illustrated.
Figure 1 is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a verti cal section, line 2 2, Fig. 1.
In the drawings, B is the panel.
D is the frame, and O is the covering, of cloth, leather, or other suitable flexible sheet material. The panelB and frameD are made of wood or other suitable material. The panel B has a tongue G, which entirely surrounds its edge and fits within a correspondinglyshaped groove around the inner edge of the frame D. Furthermore, the panel B on its upper side has a groove E, which entirely surrounds and is contiguous to the'inner edge of the frame.
The covering 0 covers the upper surface of the panel B, and it lies at its 'edges'within the may be at one side only or at two or more sides of the panel, preferably, however, at all sides.
By attaching the covering 0 as described cement, tacks, or other fastenings, and gimp, leather, or such like finishings for the edges of the covering, are severally dispensed with, and obviously the covering can be readily removed for being cleansed, or for being replaced with another, or for any other purpose, and without requiring skilled or experienced labor. This invention is applicable to desk and table slides, as well as to desk and table tops.
Having thus'described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is
The combination of a frame D, at its inner edge having a groove, and a panel B, having a tongue G to fit said groove, and on its upper side a groove E contiguous to the frame In testimony whereof I have hereunto set D, with a covering; C for and lying within my hand in the presence of two subscribing the groove E of the panel B, and a strip F, witnesses.
entered and driven into said panel-groove E, WILLIAM F. SMITH. and thereby fastening the covering therein Witnesses: and to the panel and frame, substantially as C. W. CARTER,
described. W. B. TENNEY.
