Be it known that I, Finn) A. Sorrurrz, citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Edge Constructions for Furniture Tops, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a novel edge construction for desk tops, table tops, seats and like articles of furniture.

In the construction otnietal furniture,

particularly oflice furniture, it is preferable to provide the top or exposed surface thereof with a covering of material that will not easily scratch or mar and at the same time be more comfortable to the sense of touch. That is to say, it is desirable to make the cover'or top facing of articles of furniture of the type set forth of some material other than metal which will possess a certain degree of softness to deaden the resonanceof metal, while at the same time providing a surface which feels comfortable to the hand and also produces a satisfactory surface for writing or other like uses. Tops entirely of wood have been used for desks, but, as it is desirable to use metal through out as far as possible the present construction contemplates a sheet metal top having a novel edge and corner construction whereby linoleum or the like may be used as the covering for the metal thereby obviating the disadvantages incident to an all metal surface above pointed out.

A further and more specific object of the invention is to provide a simple and practical construction that will reliably hold the edges of the linoleum to prevent curling 'up or roughing thereof where it is subjected to excessive wear.

\Vith the above and other objects in view which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.

. A preferred and practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a corner of the improved top construction.

According to the present invention it is proposed to provide a metallic top body 1 consisting of the wall 2 and depending side flanges 3 which may be inturned as indicated at 4 to provide a smooth finished and reinforced lower corner 5. The upper edge portion of the upper wall 2 adjacent the flange 3 is provided with a depressed seat 6 extending throughout the length of the edge of the top wall and intended to accommodate the lower anchoring flange 7 of the bead strip B. lVhcn this bead str'p is placed in position the upper surface if its flange 7 will lie flush with the face of the wall 2 while the other flange 8 which constitutes a binding flange extends upwardly to provide'a seat for the cover C. The said bead strip may be made of copper, brass, Monel metal, stainless steel or like material and the anchoring flange 7 is bolted or otherwise secured in the seat 6 by any suitable fastening means, such for example as the bolts 10 whose heads are counter-sunk in the flange while the shanks project through the bottom wall of the seat t-oreceive the nuts 11. As shown in Fig. 3 these nuts may be positioned so to lock against the inside of the flange 3 to prevent displacement after the cover C has been placed in position over the upper wall of the body 1.

Also, by the above arrangement the heads of the bolt are concealed by the edges of the cover which may be a sheet of linoleum or the like that may be glued, cemented or otherwise secured to the, wall 2 of the body 1. The edge portions of the cover however, lie within the angle of the bead strip so that the binding flange 8 constitutes an ornamental as well as practical binding The upperedge 9 of the binding flange or bead may be worked over the e'dgeof the linoleum in such a way as to hook over and protect the same as well as insure its being firmly an- .present improvement will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art and it will of course be understood that changes in the form, proportion and minor details of Construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or scope of the appended claims.

I claim 1.. An edge construction for furniture tops including a top body comprising a flat uppensurface andan angularly disposed side flange, a bead strip of angular cross section having the horizontal flange thereoi secured to the flat surface of thetop body at the upper edge of the flange and ex posing the latter, and a icover applicdto the flat surface of'the top body and having its edge portion overlying the horizontal flange 01 the bead strip.
