SNATCH-BLOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,028, dated June 10, 1890.
Application filed October 19, 1889. Serial No. 327,589. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. JACKSON, Jr., of Bath, in the county of Sagadahoc and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Snatch-Blocks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and.
exact description of the same.
My invention relates to snatch-blocks, and particularly to the link closing the open side or the block. I-Ieretofore it has been customary to provide links to close the side of such blocks, and in order to hold the link in place a catch has been provided having a swiveled connection with the block, so that in order to detach the link to allow for the removal of the rope it has been necessary to turn the swiveled pin forming the catch so as to make it align with the link-opening and allow the said link to swing upon its pivot and form an opening to the space inclosed by the block. This operation is slow and requires the use of both hands. In the present caseIpro'vide the link with a spring-bolt adapted to engage with a hook projection on the block, and by means of a thumb-piece connected with the bolt I am enabled to operate the link with one hand, while the action of the link in closing is automatic.
In the drawings, Figure l is an elevation of the snatch-block embodying my improvement, and Fig. 2 an elevation of the same.
A represents the block, of ordinary construction, provided with a pulley b and a hook c. The block is closed on one side and open on the other near the upper part for the admission of the rope, and for the purpose of closing this opening after the rope is in place, and at the same time adding to the strength of the block on this side, I provide a hinged link L, made of rectangular form, having its lower bearing in an eye-d on the upper edge of the short side of the block, and its upper end is adapted to pass over a projection 6, having its lower face made in hook form. Secured to the side of the link is a plate f, which carries a socket arranged centrally between the sides of the link, and this socket carries-a bolt g, with a spring 71 beneath it. A'thumb-piece 1' passes through a slot in the front, and by this the bolt is operated. It will be seen by depressing the thumb-piece the link is freed from its catch and allowed to swing outwardly to provide for the admission of the rope or the removal of the same.
WV hat I claim is- In combination with a snatch-block, a device for closing its open side, consisting of a link with a locking-bolt interposed between the sides of the link and secured thereto, and a hook for engaging said link, substantially as described.
