Hopper wagons.-In a hopper wagon provided with a pair of doors adapted to open downwardly the doors are positively supported in the closed position by a saddle member mounted on a shaft below, and at right angles to, the hinge line of the doors. The saddle member 29, Fig. 7, is mounted on a transverse shaft 28, which is supported in brackets 32. The doors 23 are curved and have external angle ribs 26 against which the saddle member bears when rotating into the closed position. Movement of the doors beyond their closed position is prevented by stops on the side of the hopper opening. The shaft 28 is rotated by a lever 34 or through gearing, and is locked in position by means of a jaw 40, Fig. 12, engaging a flat 37 on the shaft 28. The jaw is part of a right-angled lever pivoted to the underframe of the vehicle by a pin on its horizontal arm and operated by a handle 45 on the pivot 44 through links 42, 43. Two such locking-devices are provided for the shaft 28 and are cross-connected by a rod. The handle 45 may be secured in the locked position by the link of a chain. The doors 23 may be flat and suspended back to back from an angle beam on the centre-line of the vehicle. The saddle-piece is triangular in shape with a wedge shaped extension on its apex for facilitating the opening out of the doors when in the depending position.
