The door spreader by rivets 7 and 8 respectively passing through the flanges and 6.
Intermediate its ends the door arm is offset as at 9 to pass around the outstanding flange 10 of the door, and projects outwardly beyond the side edge of the door to form an extension 11 having an aperture 12.
R-igidly mounted on the side sheet 1 of the hopper is a bracket or member 13, any suitable means such as rivets 14, 15 and 16 being employed for this purpose. The bracket 13 is fashioned with spaced portions 17 and 18 respectively, forming jaws which project outwardly beyond the plane of the closed door, the aws being adapted to receive the extension 11 of the door arm. Apertures 19 and 20 are formed in the spaced portions 17 and 18 respectively which, when the door is in closed position, are in registering alinement with the aperture 12 of the door arm extension.
The distance between the inner surfaces of the aws 17 and 18 progressively increases in the direction of opening movement of the' door, and the respectively adjacent surfaces of the door arm extension are so arranged that, when the door is in closed position, they are substantially parallel with the inner surfaces of the jaws.
It will be appreciated that should the parts of the mechanism become distorted or should the door sag upon its hinges, due to the extreme service conditions to which railway cars are subjected, the divergence of 'the inner surfaces of the aws 17 and 18 is such as to guide the extension into proper relation therewith.
Interposed between the bracket 13 and the side sheet of the hopper is a movable door locking member 21, the latter being apertured as at 22 for receiving the inwardly extending boss or lug 23 of the bracket member 13. The diameter of the aperture 22 is greater than that of the boss 23 to permit a relative sliding movement between the locking member 21 and the bracket 13.
The locking member 21 is preferably of hook shape having a normally downwardly projecting portion 24 which is adapted to extend through the apertures 19 and 20 of the jaws and the aperture 12 of the door arm extension.
The outer surface 26 of the portion 24 of the hook is radial, being struck from the rivet 15 as a center, and the portions of the apertures 19 and 20 which cooperate with this surface of the hook are similarly curved. The inner surface 27 of thehook extension 24, and the cooperating portions of the apertures formed in the aws and the door arm exten sion 11, are inclined with respect toline AA, so that the extension 24 of the hook may readily pass through the respective apertures when it is rotated about the rivet 15 as a center. It will'of course be appreciated that upon rotation of the hook to door supporting position the extension 24 thereof forces the door tightly shut.
Due to the action of gravity tending to swing the door open from the closed position indicated in Figure 1, the hook extension 24, by cooperating with the apertures in the jaws and door arm extension, is in double shear'and the pivotal support of the hook is relieved from all strain.
The lowerportion of the face 27 of the hook is relatively inclined and affords a ledge 28 for supporting the door in a position of partial or preliminary closure. Upon reference to Figure 2 it will be seen that, when supporting the door in this position, a portion of the aperture 12 in the door arm exten sion engages the ledge 28 and an opposite portion of the aperture 19, in the upper jaw 17, engages the outer curved surface 26 of the hook extension 24. This latter portion of the hook is thus in single shear when supporting the door in partial closed position and the pivotal support 23 is relieved from strain.
In order that the door arm extension 11 may be readily inserted between the jaws of the bracket 13, a cam or dog 29 is pivotally connected by a rivet 30 to the hook for supporting the latter in an elevated position. Adjacent its upper portion, the bracket 13 is provided wtih a laterally projecting marginal flange 31, the upper surface of which is fashioned with a depression 32 for cooperating with the cam 29 whereby when the latter is rotated into engagement therewith the hook is maintained in a. position such that the door arm extension may be easily brought into cooperative relation with the jaws of the bracket 13. The cam, in addition to the function just ascribed thereto, may advantageously be used to lock the hook in a p0 wherein a mechanical advantage may be utilized to force the door from a preliminary closed position to a final closed position. In
the present embodiment of the invention this means is provided by forming the lateral flange 31 with an apertured extension 35, constituting a fulcrum for a removable lever (not shown). the aperture either from the top or bottom thereof and is disposed so as to engage with an integral lug or projection 36 formed on the outer end of the door arm extension 11.

In a railway dump car having a la-ding discharge opening, the combination with a hinged door for closing said opening,the door being movable to open position under the influence of gravity, of a member mounted on the door having a portion projecting outwardly beyond a side edge thereof, a bracket member rigidly secured to the car body haw ing jaws for receiving the outwardly pro jecting portion of the door member, thei ner surfacesof the aws and the adj acent'sun faces of the cooperating portions of the door member diverging outwardly in the di rection of the opening movement of the door, and a movable means adapted to be insertet in apertures in the jaws of the bracket mere-- ber and jaw cooperating portion of the door member to support the door in closed position. In a railway'dump car having a lading discharge opening, the combination with a hinged door for closing said opening, the door being movable to open position under the influence of gravity, of a bracket member socured to the car body, a member rigidly mounted on the door, each of said members being fashioned with apertures adapted to be brought into substantial alinement when the door is moved to closed position and means pivotally mounted on the car body having a portion cooperable with the apertures ofboth of said members for supporting the door in closed position, said portion of the pivotally mounted means being in double shear when in door supporting engagement with said members.

In a railway dump car having a lading discharge opening, the combination with a hinged door for closing said opening, the doorbeingmovable to open position under the influence of gravity, of a plurality of members rigidly mounted on the door and car body respectively, one of said members having portions overlappingly embracing portions of the other of said members, said sin-- bracing portions being spaced from each other in a direction substantially normal to the hinge axis of the door, and pivotally mounted means engageable with the said portions of both of the members for supporting the door in closed position, the plane of pivseeaes otal movement of said means being substantially normal to the plane of the door.
9. In a railway dump car having a lading discharge opening, the combination with a I hinged door for closing said opening, the door being movable to open position under the influence of gravity, of door locking mechanism involving a plurality of members immovably secured to the door and car body respectively, and a pivoted member having an angular extension engageable with each of said immovable members for supporting the door in closed position, one of said immovable members having spaced portions engageable with one side of said pivoted member and the other of said immovable members having a portion adapted to be disposed intermediate saidspacedportions and engageable with the opposite side of said pivoted member.
10. In a railway dump car having a lading discharge opening, the combination with a hinged door for closing said opening, the
door being movable to open position under the influence of gravity, of a plurality of members rigidly mounted on the door and car body respectively, a pivoted member having a portion engageable with each of said rigidly mounted members for maintaining the door in closed position, said member being movable to door supporting position under the influence of gravity, and means forming apivotal support for said pivoted member,the said portion of the latter member being 00- operable with said rigidly mounted members so as to be in double shear and to relieve the pivotal support of said pivoted member from strain'incident to maintaining the door in closed position.
11'; In a railway dump car having a lading discharge opening, the combination with a hinged door for closing said opening, the door being movable to open position under the influence of gravity, of mechanism for supporting the door in a plurality of positions of closure involving movable means and a plurality of fixed members, said fixed mem bers being rigidly mounted on the door and car body respectively, one oi? said members having spaced portions and the other of said members having a portion adapted to be interposed between said spaced portions, said movable means being engageable with one of said spaced portions and the said interposed portion for supporting the door in a position of partial closure, and the said movable means being engageable with both of said spaced portions and the interposed portion for supporting the door in a position of final closure.

In a. railway dump car having a lading discharge opening, the combination with a hinged door for closing said opening, the door being movable to open position under the influence of gravity, of an arm rigidly mounted on the door and having an apertured portion, a bracket rigidly mounted on the car body and having spaced apertured portions for receiving therebetween the apertured portion of the door arm,a member pivotally connected with the bracket and engageable with the apertured portions of the latter and of the door arm for supporting the'door in a plurality of positions of closure,
and means pivotally'mounted on the pivoted member for maintaining it in a position cor responding to that assumed by it when supporting the door in partially closed position and for locking the pivoted member in fully closed position.

In'a railway dump car having a lading discharge opening, the combination with a hinged door for closing said opening, the door being movable to open position under the influence of gravity, of an arm rigidly mounted on the door and having an apertured portion, a bracket rigidly mounted on the car body and having spaced apertured portions for receiving therebetween the apertured portion of the door arm, a member pivotally connected to said bracket and engageable with the apertured portions of the latter and the apertured portion of the door arm'for supporting the door in partially closed and fully closed position, said memher being movable into both positions of closure under the influence of gravity, and means pivotally connected to said pivoted member, said'means being engageable with the bracket for supporting the pivoted memher in "a position corresponding to that assumed by it when supporting the door in pan tially closed position and being engageable with the bracket for locking the pivoted member when supporting the door in fully closed position. r

A car door mechanism for the hopper of a railway car involving, in combination .with a door hingedly associated with the hopper, a plurality of brackets one of which is secured to thedoor and the other to the side of the hopper, a member movably mounted on one of said brackets and engageable with the other to support the door in closed position, and means movably carried by said member and engageable with the bracket upon which it is mounted for locking themember in door-supporting position. 28. A car door mechanism for the hopper of a railway car involving, in combination with a door hingedly associated with the hopper, an arm rigidly secured to the door, a bracket secured to the side of the hopper, a member movably mounted on the bracket and engageable with the arm to support the door in partially closed and in fully closed position, said member being movable into engagement with said arm under the influence of gravity, and means for maintaining the said member in a position corresponding to that assumed by the latter when supporting the door in partially closed position, said means being movable with and with respect to said member and being adapted to be operatively interposed between the latter and the said bracket. 7
