M. E. TIBBITT S. PLOW POINT AND SHARE.
No. 429,980. Patented June 1Q, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
MATTHIAS E. TIBBITTS, OF BRUNSWICK, OHIO.
PLOW POINT AND SHARE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,980, dated June 10, 1890.
Application filed January 21, 1890. Serial No. 337,633. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MATTHIAS E. TIBBITTS, a citizen of the United. States, residing at Brunswick, in the county of Medina and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Plow Point and Share, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plow points and shares; and it has for its object to construct a plow point and a share both of which shall be reversible, so that they may be turned after one side has been reduced by wear, so as to present new wearing edges or surfaces.
The invention consists in the improved constructionof the said plow point and share, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved plowpoint. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the share. Fig. 4 is a rear edge view of the same. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional View of the share. Fig. 6 is a detail view showing the relative arrangement of my improved plow point and share.
The same numerals of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
1 designates the plow-point, the body of which consists of an approximately rhomboidal shank, broad at the middle, tapering toward its ends, and terminating at its rear end in a screw-threaded stem 2, having a nut 3, by means of which it may be secured detachably to the standard of a plow. The front end of the point is formed by a cutting-edge 4, formed by the converging ends of the faces 5 5, formed on opposite sides of the body of the shank at angles of about forty-five degrees to the latter. Recesses 6 are formed between the inner edges of the faces 5 and the body of the shank, and the outer edge 7 of each of the said faces is constructed so as to be in a line with the landside of the plow, to which the point is attached.
8 designates the reversible share, which consists of a steel plate wedge-shaped in crosssection and having a cutting-edge 9, from which the ends are beveled, as shown at 10, to the rear edge 11, which is provided with a longitudinal groove 12, adapted to form a seat for a lip molded on that portion of the standard which supports the mold-board and share, and therefore makes a smooth joint between the share and mold-board. The ends of the share are provided on opposite sides with shallow curved recesses 13, adapted to fit the configuration of the shank 1 of the reversible point, the recesses 6 of which are adapted to form seats for the beveled ends or edges 10 of the reversible share. The latter is provided with bolt-holes 14E, countersunk on opposite sides for the reception of bolts, by means of which it may be attached to the plow-standard. The faces of the reversible share are concaved, as shown. 7
The operation of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. The plow-standard is socketed to receive the rear end of the plow-point, which is secured by the nut 3, and the groove or recess 6 of which affords a seat in which one end of the share may be securely mounted, thus forming a neat and smooth joint. The share is bolted to the standard and is additionally secured by the standard, the lip of which is seated in the groove 12. When one side of the share has been worn out, it may be reversed end for end and the point be likewise reversed, thus greatlyincreasing the life and durability of the plow. The construction is simple and inexpensive, and the parts may be easily applied and adjusted in operative position.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The herein described improved plowpoint, consisting of an approximately rhomboidal shank, broad at the middle, tapering toward its ends, terminating at its rear end in a screw-threaded stem, and having at its front end a cutting-edge formed by the converging ends of faces 5, formed on opposite sides of the shank, said point being provided with recesses 6, formed between the inner edges of the faces 5 and the body of the shank, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A reversible plowshare comprising a wedge-shaped plate having beveled ends and provided at its thick upper edge with a longitudinal groove, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with the reversible plow-point having the shank or body taperin g toward both ends, the screw-threaded stem at its rear end, the cutting-edge at its front end formed by the converging, ends of opposite faces, and the grooves or seats at the intersection of said faces with the body of the shank, of the reversible share consisting of a bevel-ended wedge-shaped plate, the upper edge of which has a longitudinal groove and the ends of which are provided on opposite sides with shallow concave recesses to fit the adjacent side of the shank of the reversible point, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto allixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MA'FTIIIAS E. TIBBIT'IS.
