SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,557, dated June 3, 1890.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARTHUR WELLEsLY BERNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Automatic Cover for Umbrellas and Parasols; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has relation to improvements in that class of umbrellas and parasols in which the cover may be readily removed and replaced by another; and it consists in the construction, novel combination, and adaptation of devices hereinafter specified and claimed, and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is aside elevation of an umbrella embodying; my improvements. Fig. 2 is a detail View of one of the corners of an umbrellacover, showing the same in a position upon the clasping-plate or securing device ready to be secured thereby. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the wings of the clasping-plate folded upon the corner of the cover. Fig. 4 is a side view thereof, showing the rib of the umbrella seated in the sheath or socket of the fastener; 0 and Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the fastening-cap shown in position in Fig. 1.

Referring to said drawings by letter, A indicates an umbrella-handle, which in general construction may be of any ordinary or approved construction.

B indicates the cover of my improved umbrella, which is formed of sections of material connected together in the usual wellknown manner. This cover B is provided at the corner junctions of the respective sections with attachments C, secured thereto in a manner to be described, and adapted to effect a connection of the cover with the ribs of the umbrella. This connecting attachment 0 is preferably formed of a single piece of light sheet metal or other suitable material, and it consists of a sheath orsocketafor the reception of the end of a rib and two wings or clasps 1), adapted to be bent inwardly upon the corner of the fabrics to effect an attachment therewith. As better shown in Fig.

4 of the drawings at b, the portion of the attachment O, forming the wings for attachment to the umbrella-cover, is bent outward with respect to the sheath a, so as to allow the rib to freely pass into the socket. The socket (t-lS preferably of a circular contour and is of a size and shape to receive the rib for which it is designed.

D indicates my improved securing-cap for the top of the umbrella. The cap D consists of a dome-shaped portion d and a vertical flange e at the apex thereof, the latter being of'a diameter to'closel-y fit the stick of the umbrella when placed thereon. 6 5

E indicates bayonet -slots for the attachment of the cap to the stick before referred to. These slots E, of which there are preferably two, are out at diametrically-opposite points in the peripheryof the dome and flange, and they consist of ahorizontal slot cut in the flange and an angular depending slot cut in the dome of the cap, the depending slots of the respective openings being oppositely arranged with respect to the horizontal slot, so as to enable them to be operated at one and the same time.

F indicates laterally-extending lugs designed to be seated in the bayonet-slots of-the dome-shaped cap to secure the same in position. These lugs or stops F, which are arranged at diametrically-opposite points in the stick A, are situated at a distance above the junction of the rib-band and stick, so as to allow the cover B and dome-shaped cap D to be seated between them and secured therein.

The ends of the ribs of the umbrella-frame are so formed as to allow them to enter the sheath or socket a of the attachments O, and in practice I prefer to sharpen the same.

In operation the attachments C are placed upon the corners of the cover, as has been described, and the cover is then placed upon the stick and seated upon the rib-ring when the dome-shaped cap is placed in position and 5 turned to its seat, and the ends'of the ribs are then seated in the respective sheaths'a of the fasteners O and the attachment rendered complete.

Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. As an improved article of manufacture,

the umbrella described, consisting of the stick having the diametrically-arranged pins near the outer end thereof, the ribs hinged to the stick, the removable cloth, the cap having the locking-slots to receive the pin, and the flanges I), turned over upon the edges of the removable cloth and having the integral socket portions a, substantially as specified.

2. The combination, with an umbrella having its stick provided with the studs or pins, as described, of the removable cover or cloth,

the sheaths having the socket portions 0, and

the integral flanges I), turned over the edges of the cloth, so as to confine the latter, and

the cap D, having the locking-slots to receive I 5 the pins, substantially as specified.
