To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Farm: BAGLEY, a subject of the King ofGreat Britain, residing at Farnworth, Lancaster, in the Kingdom of England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrellas; and I do hereby declare the following to a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to umbrellas, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide an umbrella which can be readily taken apart and packed in a small compartment, and which can be readily assembled to form an. umbrella which will not in general appearance be distinguishable from the ordinary umbrella.

Another object of the invention is to provide an uinbrella in which the stick is made insections, and in which the ribs, thei braces, and the top notch are detachable from the stick, and the cover is detachable from the ribs, so that the entire umbrella may be readily assembled and quickly taken apart for packing.

The foregoing and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illus trated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the umbrella frame and stick with the cover removed and the umbrella closed.

Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken through the center of the cover, and the umbrella shown opened out, with the handle portion of the stick broken away.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the lowerand 2 the upper section of the stick of my collapsible umbrella. The section 1 is provided with an enlargement at its lower end, which constitutes a handle. The sections 1 and 2 are detachably connected together by means of a clasp 7, which will be hereinafter more fully described.

Thesection 1 has secured to its upper end the sleeve 3, which is provided with an opening 4. The upper section 2 is provided near its lower end with a similar sleeve 5, and the section 2 has its lOWer end reduced as at 5 around which is secured a sleeve 6, which sleeve is adapted to telescope in the sleeve 3 carried by the lower section 1. A spring clasp 7 above mentioned is connected to the sleeve 6 carried on the reduced porti'on 5 and it is provided with an enlarged portion 8 which constitutes a head and this head is adapted to fit in the opening a in the sleeve 3 and thus hold the handle member 1 and upper section 2 detachably connected together. The sleeve 3 is provided with a lug 7 and the sleeve 5 has a recess 8'. The lug 7 is adapted to fit when the two sections are forced together thus preventing the rotation of one section relatively to the other.

A top notch 9 is removably and slidably mounted on the upper section 2 and has pivotally secured thereto a plurality of ribs 1.0. The top notch 9 is provided at diametrically opposite points with

A ring 13 is provided at diametrically opposite points with pivoted catches 12 and positioned in the central opening in the cover 14 and the cover is secured to the edges thereof. Above the ring is clamped the flaring collar 15, which collar is provided with depending fingers 16, which fingers have their lower ends provided with outwardly projecting lugs 17. The outwardly projecting lugs 17 of the flaring collar 15 are adapttoo A collar 18 is rigidly connected to the" upper section 2 and is provided with an anp nular flange on its'upper edge, which flange is designated 19. The annular flange 19 is also provided at diametrically opposite points with recesses which are adapted to permit the shank portions of the catches 12 to fittherein, this perlnitting the same to be firmly inserted under the top notch 9 and hold the same against movement.

It can be readily seen that due to the fact that the ring 13 is held against movement with relation to the flaring collar 15 that the top notch 9 and collar 18 will be held against movement by the catches 12.

The ribs 10 are provided intermediate their ends with pivoted braces 20, which braces have one of their ends aivoted to lu 's 21, which lugs are carried by the rib 10. The free ends of the braces are attached to runners 22 which are provided with slots 23, which slots are adapted to be engagedby the spring 24 which is carried by the upper section 2 of the detachable-umbrella when the umbrella proper is in a raisedposition. The cover 14 is provided with a seriesof spring clasps 25 which are adapted to snap or engage-the ribs 10 at suitable points to hold the ribs into engagement with the cover 14. The outer ends of the cover areprovided at spaced distances with socket members 26 which are adapted to engage over the pointed outer ends of the ribs 10, said socket members being cut-away as, at 27 and secured to the cover 14 by suitable fastening means such as a clasp or the like.

The cover 14 is fastened to the ring 13 and carrying the flaring collar 15 is then placed over the upper section 2 and the catches 12 carried by the ring 13 are snapped into their respective recesses in the top notch 9 thusholding the parts assembled. It can be thus seen that in this position the umbrella is ready for use and when it is desired to carry the umbrella in a small package or compartment the sections 1 and 2 may be readilydisconnected and the cover 14 removed by releasing the catches 12 of the top notch 9 and the various parts readily folded and placed in a small package.

Various changes may bemade in the de tails of constructionwithout departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the claims. 7

What is claimed is 1.
