UI'BRELLA.
No. classe.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented April 20, 1909.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN A. Eenrum, a citizen of the United States ot America,re siding in the city of St. Louisand Stat-e of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrellas, of which the following is a full, clear, and'eXact description, reference being had to the accompanyh ing drawings, forming part of this specification. Y
My invention relates to an improvement in umbrellas more particularly intended for use in wagon umbrellas and whereby the ribs of the umbrella frame are secured to the lower edge ofthe umbrella.
Figure I is a view partly in elevation and partly in section of the frame and. cover of an umbrella with one of my, rib connecting de vices shown in longitudinal section and another of the devices illustrated in dotted lines, as viewed from the outside ot the. urnbrella. Fig. II is an enlarged elevation of one of the devices viewed from the `inside of the umbrella. Fig. III is a longitudinal sec-V tion taken on line III-III, Fig. II. Fig. IV is an enlarged elevation of oneot the devices viewed from the outside of the umbrella. Fig. V is a cross section taken on line V-V7 Fig. II. Fig. VI is a view ot one of the blanks from which the cover attachingV devices are made. Fig. VII is a perspective view of one ot the cover attaching devices as it appears previous to its attachment to the cover of an umbrella.
In the accompanying drawings: nates the cover of an umbrella and B one ot the ribs of an umbrella frame.
My cover attaching devices are attached to the cover of an umbrella at its lower edge at the locations at which the ribs of the umbrella frame are to be present when the cover is stretched over the frame, and each cover attaching device is provided with a .socket into which the rib enters and seats.V
1 designates the back member ofthe cover attaching device, and which has extending from it at its u per end a clip tongue 2 that is provided with prongs 8 extending at right angles to the body of the tongue. The Vback member l has formed integral therewith a socket member 4:, that extends from one side oi' the back member and is curled over from said side to the opposite side of the back member, as seenmost clearly in Figs. V and A deeg-l.
I l i i vn,
the edge of the socket member being brought to bear upon the back member at its sideopposite to that with which the soclret member has connection. The socket mem- .ber i has extending from it, at a point ap proximately midway of its width, a clip tongue 5 which is located at the end of the socket member opposite that lacing the clip tongue 2, and at the end of said member which is to serve as the bottom end in the use of my cover attaching device. The clip tongue 5 is bent inwardly from the center oi the socket member and transversely of said member, so that it will serve to close the lower end ot the socket member to provide a bottom therefor, and this tongue is then bent longitudinally from its portion just mentioned so that it extends in line with the clip ltongue 2. v
From the longitudinal portion of the clip tongue 5 there extends Ia portion 6 arranged at a right angle to said longitudinal portion andparallel to the prongs 3. The clip tongue portion 6 terminates in prongs 7 that er;- tend longitudinally ot' the back member l and at a right angle to the clip tongue por* tion 6.
Before applying my cover attaching devices to the cover oi' an umbrella, I preferably apply to said cover at the points at which the devices are to be applied reintorcing stripsV 8, ot leather, or other suitable material, and which are applied in part to the outside of the umbrella cover and in part to the inside ot said cover.
The cover attaching device which has been constructed from the blank shown in Fig. VI, and which before attachment appears as illustrated in Fig. VII, is secured to the umbrella cover in the following manner: rIhe back of the device is placed against the inside face of the umbrella cover in such position that the longitudinal portion of the clip tongue 5 will rest against the umbrella cover or the reinforcing member applied thereto, and with the portion 6 otl said clip tongue occupying a position beneath the lower edge of the cover. The portion 6 of the clip tongue 5 is then bent inwardly to the outer surface of the umbrella cover or the reinforcing member thereon, and the prongs 7 are forced through the cover and reinforcing member whereby the clip tongue 5 is firmly attached to the cover. The upper end of the vcover c) ry attaching device is connected to the cover` by forcing the prongs 3 of the clip tongue 2 through the cover, and then bending the prongs over so that they will lie parallel with the back member 1, as seen in Figs. l and HI.
The herein described umbrella cover attaching device being made in one piece and produced as set forth is of a very simple and durable construction and is so connected to the umbrella cover as to avoid any possibility of its becoming loosened or detached therefrom under strain in the use of an umbrella in which the device is incorporated.
I claim l. An umbrella cover attaching device composed of a single piece of material and comprising a back member, a socket member carried by said back member and curled from one of its sides to the opposite side, a clip tongue at the upper end of said back member, and a clip tongue extending from the lower end of said socket member transversely oi the socket member to provide a bottom therefor.
2. A cover attaching device for umbrellas composed of a single piece of material, comprising a back member, a socket member curled from one side of said back member to the opposite side of said back member, a clip tongue at the upper end of said back member, and a clip tongue extending backwardly tongue at the upper end of said back member, a clip tongue extending from the lower end of said socket member transif'ersely ol' the socket member to provide a bottom therefor, said tongues being provided. with prongs whereby the device is attached to an umbrella cover.
4. A cover attaching device lor umbrellas` composed of a single piece of material, comprising a back member, a socket member curled from one side of said back member to the opposite side of said back member, a clip tongue at the upper end of said back member, a clip tongue extending back- Wardly from the front of said. socket member to said back member to provide a bottom for said socket member, said tongues being provided Witli prongs whereby the device is altaclied to an umbrella cover.
