To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDWARD S. SMITH, of WVaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Stocking-Supporters, (13;) and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, ine Figure 1, a face view of the loop complete; Fig. 2, a transverse section on line 00 00,: Fig. 3, a face view of the blank from which the loop is formed; Fig. 4, a transverse section of the same on line m on; Fig. 5, the same as Fig. 3, showing the projections to a as closed over onto the body; Fig. 6, a transverse section on line a z of Fig. 1.

This invention relates to an improvement in that class of stocking-supporters in which a loop is attached to the end of a strap suspended from above, the said loop being'ot V shape, the apex downward, and so that a portion of the stocking drawn through the upper or broader portion of the opening in the loop and drawn down into the narrower portion will be so grasped as to be held secure. This is a common and well-known construction of loop for stocking-supporters. Many of these V-shaped loops are cut from sheet metal; but it is very difficult to so smoothly finish the inner edge of the opening that it is not liable to cut the stocking or garment to which it may be attached. Various devices have been employed to give to the opening a rounded edge. This has been done by bushing the inner edge, and in some cases by making the loop in the form of an eyelet, the flange being of the same V shape as the body and extending through a corresponding opening in a strap, the flange closed down upon the reverse side in the same manner as an eyelet.

My invention relates particularly to doubling the met-al at the edge of the opening, whereby the desired rounded edge is produced; and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claim.

A represents the two sides of the loop connected by a transverse bar B at the top, the two legs extending downward, converging toward the lower end, where they are connected, so as to produce the required V-shaped open ing, the bar B serving as a means for the attachment of the strap. The blank for the body of the loop is cut from sheet metal, as seen in Fig. 3, the sides A A extending from the bar downward, but their lower ends disconnected. Upon the inner edge of the two sides A A inward projections a a are formed. These projections extend from near the lower end upward toward the bar B, but stopping short of the bar, so as to leave a space I) between the upper ends of these projections a a and the said bar B. At the lower end the sides A A are constructed with a notch d upon the outer edges, the inward projections a a. starting from a line upon the inside corresponding with the upper end of the said notches cl on the outside, and, as seen in Fig. 3, the projections to a are then doubled over and outward onto the body, as on the broken lines, Fig. 3, and, being closed upon the body, as represented in Fig. 5, give to the inner edge of the two sides a neat and smooth rounded shape. Then the two sides are bent inward, bringing their lower ends substantially together, as seen in broken lines, Fig. 5.

To secure the ends firmly together a sheetmetal clip C, in width corresponding to the length of the notches cl (1 in the outer edge of the sides A A, is bent around the two sides in the said notches and closed thereon, as seen in Figs. 1 and 6, which firmly unites the two ends.

The supporter is attached to the strap by means of the bar B at the upper end in the usual manner, and the operation of the supporter is the same as in the usual construction From the foregoing it will be understood that I do not claim, broadly, a stocking-supporter consisting of aV-shaped loop having the inner edge rounded by doubling the metal. Neither do I claim, broadly, a stocking-supporter made from sheet metal,'having the two sides disconnected in the formation of the supporter, but united to complete the supporter; but
