LATCH FOR CAR-DOORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,502, dated .T une 3, 1890.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALVIN B. CHAFFIN and ORRIN A. GONE, citizens of the United States, residing at Lowville, in the county of Lewis and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Latches for Car-Doors; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in fastenings for doors, and while it is more specially adapted foreardoors, and we have so chosen to show its application in the drawings, it will of course be understood that it is applicable to other structures where a door is used.
It has for its object to provide a fastening for doors by means of which the door is securely held in a vclosed position when itis thrown to, and at the same time the hasp is other fastening, such as a padlock.
A The novelty resides in the peculiar combination, and the construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the appended claim. I
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form apart of this specification, and in which- Figure l is an elevation of a portion of a car with the door provided with our improved fastening. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the lock and hasp detached. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the spring-catch.

Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a portion of a car or other receptacle, andll the door hinged thereto, as shown at a. On the car near the edge of the door farthest from its hinge are the staples C and D, the staple C being ar- Serial No. 317,081. (No model.)
door at one end, as at b, and nearits free endV provided with two elongated slots or openings c and d, the'slot c being formed at right angles to the length of the hasp and designed to receive the staple C, and the slot d being arranged at an angle to the length of the hasp and designated to receive the staple D, as will hereinafter more fully appear. hasp is secured the casing F, provided with flanges e, having suitable holes to receive the means of securing it to the hasp. This case is closed at the ends, as shown. Within the case is arranged to slide a spring-actuated bolt G, working in a housing f within the casing, its beveled end g working through an opening h in one of the end walls of the housing, and the spring 'L' around the shank of the bolt and'arranged between the rear end wall of the housing and a shoulder 7' on the bolt.
H is 'a handle attached to the bolt and working through a slot in the casing.
In practice the spring-catch is secured to the hasp in such a position that the slot c in the hasp will be inclosed in the casing, and when the door is closed andthe hasp brought in place the staple C will pass through the slot c, and the bolt will be shot through the said staple above the hasp and there automatically lock the door. The staple D will at the same time pass through the slot d in the hasp, ready to receive the seal or other locking device.
It will be 'seen that by the above construction the spring-catch is carried by the hasp, and as the hasp is brought into place when the door is closed the catch will hold the door closed and the hasp in place to receive the other fastenings. The spring -catch is entirely concealed and it serves to bind the door to its frame.
