To all whom t may concern.-

Be itkuown that I, NICHOLAS Zoee, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sash-W'eight Attachers, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to furnish a very simple, secure, and readily-applied device for attaching window-sash-balancing weights to their respective sash-chains; and it consists of a wire forming a loop for the reception of the perforated end of the sashweight, one shank of the wire loop having an angular bend forming a lateral projection, which is curved slightly and notched or grooved transversely upon its upper surface, and is inserted through the end link of the chain, and the other shank of the wire loop having a loop or eye large enough to be passed upon the said lateral projection, so as to surround the same and lodge in the said notch or groove, as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents an edge view of my Said improved device attached to a sash weight and chain. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same as seen in direction of arrow l, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is an edge view from the same edge as in Fig. l, showing the device in its normal condition, as when detached. Fig. 4 is a Side view of Fig. 3, seen in direction of arrow 2.

A designates the sash-chain; B, the sashweight, and C my improved attacher. The latter is a wire bent to form a suficientlylarge loop to comfortably receive the weight, to which it is attached by passing one of the loop-Shanks c or c through the hole or eye b of the weight. For the purpose of interlocking the shanks a c and attaching to the chain, one of the Shanks, as c, has at its end an elbow or angular bend, thus forming a lateral projection e. This is slightly curved downward, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4., and upon its upper surface is made transversely a notch or groove n. vThe other shank c has upon its end an eye or loop d, adapted to be passed upon, so as to surround the lateral projection e of the other shank. The weight having been first suspended in a loop, as in Figs. l and 2, the projection e is inserted through the last link of the chain A, after which the loop or eye CZ of the shank c is passed over the end of the projection e, upon the upper surface of which the loop is adjusted to press tightly, so as to be necessarily sprung over the curved end before it reaches the notch or groove n, into which it then lodges, the wire loop being then in position, as in Fig. 2, suspended upon the arm of the projection e in the end link of the chain, the two shanks a c being thus interlocked and occupying the position shown-viz., one at each side of the link. The notch c, though, preferably may be dispensed with. In making the wire loop C the wire is bent so that in its normal shape,

when the eye cl is disengaged from the arm a, the shank c occupies relative to the other shank a the position in Fig. 3 1'. c.,the ends spring apart-so as to always leave an opening ready for introducing one of the Shanks through the hole l) in the weight, yet in such position relative to the notch 'a' that the face of the eye d is normally in the same plane as the said notch, (see Fig. 4,) so that the shank c must be sprung out beyond the end of the arm e, as well as laterally relative to the same movement, before it can be entered upon the said arm. By giving to the wire loop the aforesaid normal shape it has no tendency, when once passed upon the arm e, to be displaced or slip off from the said arm, whether or not it be retained by a notch, as n.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination, with the sash cord and weight, of the wire weight and chain connecting loop, one of whose members has the lateral slightly hook-pointed terminal arm inserted through the chain and having a notch in the back or upper side of the part projecting beyond the chain-link, and the other member has an eye in the upper end engaging the notch of said terminal arm by springing into it on the opposite side of the chain-link to the first-mentioned member, so that both members support said terminal arm engaging the link, substantially as described. 2. The combination, with the sash cord and weight, of the wire weight and chain connecting loop, one of whose Inembers has the lateral slightly hook-pointed terminal arm IOO inserted through the chain and having a notch in the back or upper side of the part projecting beyond the chain-link, and the other member has an eye in the upper end engaging the notch of said terminal arm by springing into it on the opposide side of the chain-link to the first-mentioned member, so that both members support said terminal arm engaging the link, and the members of theloop having the set laterally divergng from the plane of the bend of the loop, whereby in the disconnected condition the ends are normally open for inserting the said lateral pro- NICHOLAS ZOG G.
