SUSPENDER-BUCKLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,119, dated April 11, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILBUR F. OSBORNE, of Ansonia, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Suspender-Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in

My invention relates to an improvement in Suspender-buckles, the object being to produce a simple, inexpensive, convenient and effective article. 7

With these ends in View my invention consists in a Suspender-buckle having certain details of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.

The tubular sheet-metal frame A, of my improved buckle, corresponds in transverse section to the general dimensions in transverse section, of a piece of webbing, and its front wall is constructed with a long narrow slot or opening, a.

The clamping-lever B, of the buckle, consists of a single piece of sheet-metal having its upper edge B turned inward at a right angle to form a clamping edge and preferably, though not necessarily, serrated. Ear-like trunnions, b, 1), formed integral with and extending from the opposite ends, of the said clamping-edge, provide for the pivotal suspension of the lever from the buckle-frame, as the said edge is thus made longer than the slot 0. therein. The lower edge of the said lever is constructed to form a long central spring guard-finger, B and two tubes B B located on opposite sides of the said finger,

and formed from leaves which are indicated by b, b, in Fig. 5 of the drawings. The said frame and lever are combined so that the inwardly bent clamping-edge of the latter will extend into the former through the slot therein, whereby the ear-like trunnions of the said lever are located within the buckle-frame, the inner face of the outer wall whereof forms a bearing for them. Preferably the said frame is made just enough narrower than the length of the slot except where the said trunnions project from it, to permit the frame and lever to be assembled by slipping the lower end of the frame through the slot first, and then applying the hook thereto.

The hook of the buckle is formed from a singlepiece of Wire, bent to form the hook proper C, opening upward and outward and centrally depending from what I may term a rectangular frame having a lower side C, ends 0 O and an upper side composed of trunnions C G which respectively enter the outer ends of the tubes B B of the clamping-lever to which the hook is thus perma nently secured though free to swing forward and back. When the said frame, lever and wire hook are assembled together, the guardfinger B extends downward to close the mouth of the hook.

As shown in Fig. 7, of the drawings, the buckle-frame D, clamping-lever E, and hook F, are substantially of the construction above described, with the exception that instead of forming the guard-finger in the same piece with the clamping lever, the entire lower edge of the same is bent to form a tube E to receive the trunnions of the wire hook, the guard-finger being formed from a piece of wire, bent to form aloop G, and ends G, G, the latter being bent into notches e, 6, formed at opposite points in the lower edge of the clamping-lever. Still another way would be to fasten the guard-finger to the hook itself. I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described, but hold myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.

I am aware, however, that it is old to make a buckle having a tubular sheet-metal frame constructed with a long horizontal slot in one of its sides, and a sheet-metal clamping lever pivotally suspended from the said 'frame through the slot therein, by trunnions located at the respective ends of its upper edge, which is turned inward at a right angle so as to pass through the said slot in the frame.

I I am also aware that it is old to furnish the clamping-lever of such a buckle, with means, made of wire, for the attachment of a suspender-end. a

I am further aware that the clamping-lever of such a buckle, has been made with aguard either of sheet-metal or of Wire, to prevent the accidental detachment of a suspender -end from a hook or other device forming another feature of the buckle.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, -is- The herein described suspender -buckle, consisting-0f the tubular sheet-metal frame A, constructed with a long narrow slot or opening a, the sheet-metal clamping-lever B, having its upper edge turned inward at a right angle, and entered into the said slot, and furnished at its ends with trunnions b b,

and-having itslower edge shaped to form one ing witnesses.
