- CLASP.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 16, I9I6.

attounq UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTHONY GIARDINO, OF BROCK'ION, MASSACHUSETTS.
CLASP.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANTHoNY GIARDINO, a citizen of the United States, residingat Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented cer-' tain useful Improvements in Clasps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The invention relates to tag holders and more particularly to the class of combined tag clasps and hangers therefor.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a combined device of this character wherein a tag containing stock indicia for the marking of merchandise will be securely held and hung upon the merchandise without possibility of the accidental loss of the tag and also will hold the same so that it can be readily inspected.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein the tag when supported thereby can be readily reversed or turned for the inspection of either side thereof when the same is hung upon merchandise thereby enabling convenient identification of such merchandise and the inspection of the tag thereon.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein the tag can be engaged with the merchandise with despatch and will be firmly fastened thereto so as to avoid the separation of said tag and merchandise.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which possesses simplicity in construction and effectiveness in its purpose, ready and convenient application'of the tag to the merchandise and the handling thereof when hung thereon and also which is inexpensive in manufacture.
Vith these and other objects in View the invention consists in the features of construction, combination of elements. and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a shoe showing a tag supported by the device constructed in accordance with the invention applied.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the device.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 22, 19.20.
Application filed September 16, 1916. Serial No. 120,491.
Fig. 3 is a for the clasp.
F ig. 1 is a perspective view of a modified form of combined hanger and clasp.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view therethrough.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A designates generally a tag which is of the ordinary well-known construction having suitable marking or indicia thereon for identification purposes in the tagging of merchandise, for example a shoe B, the tag A being detachably connected or hung upon the latter by the use of the combined hanger and clasp hereinafter described.
The combined hanger and clasp comprises the pivotally connected aw members 10 which constitute the clasp proper which are closed through the medium of a coil tension spring 11 supported upon the pivot 12 connecting the jaw members 10 together and one of these jaw members carries a lug or stud 13, while the other jaw member is formed with an opening 14 receiving the lug or stud 13 when both jaw members are closed. The lug or stud 13 on one jaw member engages in the reinforced eyelet- 15 formed in the tag A so that the latter can be detachably held in the clasp which has its jaw members extended to form levers 16 for permitting a convenient opening of the jaw members to engage the tag A therein or disengage it from the clasp.
Loosely engaged in suitable openings in the lever 16 of the jaw members are the hook ends 17 of an inverted U-shaped resilient yoke 18 which is preferably formed from a single length of wire bent medially thereof to form a coil eye 19 centrally of said yoke and in which is fastened a swivel pin 20 for the connection of an attaching pin member therewith hereinafter described.
The attaching pin member comprises a substantially triangular shape frame 21 formed from a single length of resilient wire bent on itself to provide a prong or tine 22 at one end portion and a keeper in the form of an open eye of hook 23 in which is detachably engaged the prong or tine 22 for the closing of the frame 21. The frame 21 at one point thereof is bent to form a coiled eye 24 in which is received a swiveled pin 20 so that in this manner the frame 21 is perspective view of the hanger loosely connected to the yoke 18 and by reason thereof the tag A can be readily turned or reversed when fastened in the clasp so that either side thereof can be inspected for identification purposes in the handling of the merchandise on which the tag is hung.
In Fig. 1 is shown a slight modification of the combined hanger or clasp wherein the jaw members are formed with substantially segmental shaped ends 25 which serve as guards for the tag when fastenedw within the clasp while the lever ends 26 of the jaw members 25 hasswiveled therein the right angular crank extension 27 of a hanger link 28 whlch is formed from a single length of wire and is provided at the opposite end with a short right angled swivel extension 29 on which is swiveled the coiled eye 30 of the hanger frame 31 which is identical to the construction of the frame 21 with the exception that the coiled 'eye 30 is at right angles to the plane of the frame 31, which is adapted for detachable engagement in the pull loop or back-strap 32 of'the shoe B for the hanging and fastening of the tag there on. Likewise the frame 21 is engageable with the pull loop or back-strap 32 of the shoe B as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawin s.
From the foregoing it is thought that t e construction and manner of use of the clasp Will be clearly understood and therefore a more extended explanation has been omit- :ted.
WVhat is claimed is; In a devlce as descrlbed, in combination,
a crank, a clasp having a'pair of jaws, lateral ears onsaid jaws, pivots adapted to connect said lateral ears together, a. head formed'upon one end of one arm of said crank, and a spring adapted to separate said jaws so that one jaw yv ill engage the head on said arm and the other j aw will engage the other arm of said crank.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
ANTHQNY GIARDINO.
