Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LUCIAN FAY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN COFFINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 42,936, dated May 31, 1864.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LUGIAN FAY, of Gincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvelnentin Sheet-Metal Burial-Gases and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My improvement relates to the class of burial-cases or cofns which are formed out of sheetzinc or other sheet metal; and the object of my invention is a provision for sti'ening the bodyrim, said provision also affording a meansof attaching the lining.
Figure l is a transverse section of a sheetmetal burial-case embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a section of my improved rim to double size. tln ough my woodenlframe-pieee.
A represents the body of a sheet-metal burial-case.
B is the rim, bent inward and backward, its reilexel edge bentering a key, e, in a Wooden frame or lining strip, O, which extends entirely around the case.
The metallic rim B and Wooden frame C are traversed by metallic screw-sockets D, which may be either soldered at their extremities to Fig. 3 is a transverse section the rim and body, as shown, or may be irmly secured within the frame in any way that will prevent the escape of gases and secure the sockets from being drawn out of the frame or revolved by the screw in the act of fastening the cover. When secured in the manner represented, the sockets D serve to brace together the rim and the body.
I claim as an improvement in the manufacture of sheet-metal burial-cases- 1. The provision of the Wooden frame C, extending around the body of a sheet-metal burial case to give it strength and stiffness and to aiord a place of attachment for the lining.
2. The arrangement of the wooden frame or lining strip C c and reilexed metallic rim B b, substantially as set forth.
3. The metallic screw-sockets D, traversing the metallic rim B and wooden frame O, and secured, substantially as and for the objects set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
L. FAY.
