A. J. AUSTIN. EGG BEATER.
No. 428,999. I Patented May 27, 1890.
min/asses Inventor.-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALVIN JUDD AUSTIN, OF SHELBY, NEBRASKA.
EGG-BEATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 428,999, dated May 27, 1890.
Application filed March 3, 1890.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALVIN JUDD AUSTIN, of Shelby, in the county of Polk and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Egg-Beaters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in egg-heaters; and it consists in the particular construction hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to construct an egg-beater in which the handle or support, the operating-rod, and the partially-revolving rod are constructed entirely of wire, whereby a very cheap, simple, and durable egg-beater is produced.
The accompanying drawing represents a side elevation of an egg-beater which embodies my invention, parts being shown in one position in solid lines and in another position in dotted lines.
A represents the handle or frame, which is preferably given the shape here shown, and
which has an eye B formed upon each of its ends, so as to act as a guide and support to the two operating parts. Passed down through the upper eye is the operating-rod O, which is provided with a bend or projection D at any suitable distance above its lower end. The upper end of this rod may be formed into a handle F, of any desired shape that may be preferred, and by means of which the rod is given a simple reciprocating movement through the upper eye of the handle or frame A. Between the two ends of the frame A is Serial No. 342,412. (No model.)
placed a spiral wire G, with its lower end passing through the lower eye B, and to this lower end is attached a vibrating egg-beater II, of any suitable construction. All that portion of the wire G between the two coils or bends J, which act as stops to prevent the wire from having an endwise movement, is formed into an even spiral, so that as the operating-rod C is reciproeated its bend or projection D, by bearing against the inclined surface of the spiral wire G, causes this wire to revolve first in one direction and then in the other. As will be seen, this spiral wire is coiled upon the lower portion of the operating-rod, and thus the operating-rod is made not only to support the spiral wire in a vertical position, but also to cause it to revolve.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- In an egg-beater, the combination of the frame having an eye at its upper and lower ends, the spiral wire placed between the ends of the frame, and which has its lower end passed through the lower eye of the frame and provided with a stop that engages the top of the said eye, and the upper end of the said spiral wire formed into an eye, and an operating-rod which passes through the upper eye of the frame and the eye at the upper end of the spiral wire, and provided with a lateral projection at or near its lower end, which engages the said spiral wire, and the beater secured to the lower end of the spiral wire, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALVIN JUDD AUSTIN.
