FOLDING BATH-TUB.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 428,480, dated May 20, 1890.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDGAR H. GRANT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Marshall, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Bath- Tubs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in folding bath-tubs.

The object of the invention is to provide a bath-tub waste or outlet pipe which can be A attached to-the bottom of the bath-tub, the end of said outlet-pipe being adapted to enter the mouth of a permanently-secured wastepipe, said permanent pipe being attached to a two-part casting carrying a gasket, one side of said casting being flared, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a folding bath-tub to which my invention is adapted to be applied. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the bath-tub closed; and Fig. 3 is a side view, partly in section, of the casting.

A refers to the folding bath-tub, which is provided with rollers a a, located at the lower corner or foot of the tub, so as to hold the end of the tub slightly raised from the floor when closed, as shown in. Fig. 2. Arms 1) are pivotally secured to the wall and to the inner sides of the tub, so that when the tub is lowered in aposition for use it will be slightly inclined toward the end where the waste-pipe is located. By this construction the tub when swung downwardly will be a slight distance from the wall, and when folded will stand against the same and above the floor-level. To such a tub I attach to the bottom thereof, near the foot, an outlet-pipe O, whichis formed with an elbow, as shown, and the end which enters the permanent waste-pipe is slightly tapered.

D refers to a fixture made up of two castings D'.and D having flanges cl and (1 with perforations, whereby they are secured togethered by ordinary bolts, and between these castings D and D is placed a rubber packing e, which has a central opening of less di- 5 5 ameter than the end of the pipe 0. The lower ends of each of these castings have offsets f an df ,with countersunk perforations, through which screws can be passed for securing the fixture D permanently to the floor in its proper position, which is determined by the position of the arms or pivoted rods 5. The projecting portion of the casting D .is internally screw-threaded for the attachment of a pipe E, and the casting D has a corresponding projecting portion, the inner face of which is inclined to form a guide for the end of the outlet-pipe C. By this construction there is provided a cheap, simple, and effective means for supplying a folding bath-tub with a waste- I pipe which can be attached to the bottom of the tub, instead of above the bottom, as has been customary.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- I In combination with a folding bath-tub having rollers a a and rods Z) I), said rods being hinged to the tub and to a fixed support, an outlet-pipe secured to the bottom of the tub and provided with a portion which extends 86 parallel with the bottom thereof, a two-part fixture D, one of the sides of which has a conical projecting flange, the other portion being internally screw-threaded, a gasket clamped between the two parts of the fixture to present an internal projecting portion within the fixture, the latter being adapted to be secured to the floor, so that the waste-pipe attached to the tub will enter the same and bear within the internal projecting portion of the 90 gasket to secure a tight joint, substantially as set forth.
