WASTE-PIPE VALVE FOR BATH-TUIBS.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it knownthat I, VVILLIAM G. NEWTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in WVaste-Pipe Valves for Bath-Tubs; and I do hereby detute part of this application, and represent,
Figure 1 is a side view of waste pipe and valve for bath tubs constructed in accordance with my invention and shown as applied to a solid base tub. Fig. 2 a vertical sectional view of a waste pipe shown as applied to a tub having feet. Fig. 3 a sectional view on the line (4-4) of Fig. 2. Fig. & a sectional view on the line 0d of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 a sectional view on the line e-f of Fig.2. I
This invention relates to an improvement in valves for Waste pipes for bath tubs, and particularly to waste pipes the valves of which open by a handle at the top of the tub, either outside the tub in case of solid base tubs, or extending through the flange of the tub in case of tubs providedwith feet.
The object of the invention is to provide a construction which permits of ready attachment especially to a solid base tub but equally adapted to tubs provided with feet,
and the invention consists in the construetion hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings, I have shown the device applied to a solid base tub, that is, in which the waste opens through one of the walls of the tub as distinguished from opening through the bottom of the tub, as
shown in Fig. 2. In either case, however, I
employ a valve-casing 2 adapted to be coupled with the tub either through an opening 3 in one end of the tub as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, or in connection with a cou pling member 4:.opening through the bottom of the tub. This valve casing 2 includes a circular valve seat 5 opening into the tub and closed by a segmental valve 6. This valve has inwardly projecting sockets 7 and 8 adapted respectively to contain springs 9 and 10 and to receive studs 11 and 12 pro- Specification of Letters Patent.
jecting into them from a yoke 13 attached to the lower end of an upwardly extending arm 14 guided by a sleeve 28 formed integral with the threaded coupling 29. To the upper end of the arm 14 a valve stem 15 is attached. The upper end 16 of this valve stem is flattened on one side to be engaged by a coupling-member 17 having a D-shaped hole 18 into which the upper end 16 ofthe stem extends and so as to be firmly engaged thereby, yet free to move vertically to compensate for tubs of different height. This coupling-member 17 is rigidly connected Patented Apr. 6,1915.
' Application filed November 3, 1913. Serial No. 798,893. i
with the handle-stem 19 provided at its upper end with a handle 20 by which it may outside the tub above the upper edge thereof as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, or may extend up through the flange 21 of the tub as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The valve stem is inclosed by tubing 22 having a cap 23 which connects with the usual overflow 2 1 and near the top of the tub. Preferably the casing 2 will be provided with an outlet opening 25 in line'with the connection to the waste at the bottom of the tub and closed by. a plug 26 so that the connection with the tub may be conveniently cleaned. By turning the handle 20 the valve stem 15 is turned so as to move the valve to-open or close the passage to the waste at the bottom of the tub, the springs 8 tending to holdthe valve upon its seat and provide for any inequalities as to the internal face thereof.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings the valve is shown in its closed position in which the outlet in the bottom of the tub is closed. The valve seat or inner wall of the valveis provided with a stop rib 27 against the ends of which the edges of the valve 5 will strike so as to limit the movement-of the valve.
When the valve is turned to the open posi-.
tion water in the tub may freely flow through the valve, and when turned nearly to its open position and the plug 26 removed, access may be had to the coupling" with the tub so that it can be conveniently cleaned.
This arrangement of valve is easily applied to tubs having solid bases, or to tubs seat, a segmental valve in said casing hearing on said seat, said valve formed with two inwardly projecting sockets, a yoke provided with two studs entering said sockets,
said yoke formed with an upwardly project-- ing arm, a guide sleeve through which said arm extends, a valve stem connected with said arm, an operating handle provided With a handle stem, and means for coupling the handle stem with the valve stem said cou- 'WILLIAM G. NEWTON.
