Description

H. W. GARNES. Basin-Stopper.
No. 197,543. Patented Nov. 27,1877.
/ ATTORNEYS. a
UNIT D STATES PATENT QFFIeE;
HERBERT W. GARNES, OF BROOKLINE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BASIN-STOPPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,643, dated November 27, 1877; application filed I October 20, 1877.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it knownjthat I HERBERT Wmsmr CARNES, of Brookline,1n the county of Norfolk and. State of =Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Basin-Stopper, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide an improved mode of attaching stoppers to washbasins, so as to dispense with the chain ordinarily used for that purpose, and make it convenient to open and close the stopper.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical section of a basin-strainer with my improvement attached, the section being taken on line w a: in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top View of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the strainer usually placed in the bottom of awash-basin for discharging the water used. ais the upper rim or flange of the strainer A. B is the stopper for the upper end of the strainer. The stopper B is usually suspended on a chain attached outside of the basin; but I suspend it by lugs b and a pin, 0, or otherwise, to a lever, 0, one end of which is hinged at d to the strainer-pipe A or its flange a, and the other end provided with a handle, 0, by which the stopper may be taken out of or inserted into the strainer-pipe A.
A space forclearance is left between the lever C and the stopper B, in order to allow the latter to oscillate slightly, on the pin 0 of the former, for the purpose of being inserted vertically on its seat in the strainer A independently of the circular motion of the pin 0 on the hinge d.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The lever C, in combination with the stopper B and the strainerA of a wash-basin,connected together and operating in the manner and for the purpose substantially as specified.
Witnesses: F. A. CARNES,
GEo. W. BARNES.
