IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-STANDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,903, dated January 14, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED H. LORTON, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Wash-Stands; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a vertical section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same taken at right angles with the view shown in Fig. 1.
This invention has relation to wash stands; and-it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of a water and air tight wastereservoir, substantially as hereinafter more fully described.
Referring to the drawing, A designates a wash-stand having a basin, B, with pipes G 0 leading, respectively, from the bottom and back part to the waste-tank D, and designed, respectively, for emptying and carrying off the surplus contents of the basin. The upper end of the pipe 0 is provided with a stopper, E, which is taken out when the basin is to be emptied. The waste-tank is situated below the basin and in the back part of the washstand, oragainst the wall if a bracket is used instead of a cabinet-stand. From one side of the waste-tank, near the bottom thereof, projects a cock, E, to which is hinged a curved pipe, F, the hinge or pivot part of which constitutes the valve of the cock, and is of such a form that, when the pipe F is raised, said valve will be closed, and when lowered the valve will be opened and the water from the tank permitted to escape into any receptacle properly arranged to receive it When lowered, the pipe F projects through an oblong aperture, G, in the side of the stand. When the, pipe is raised said aperture is closed by a pivoted slab or door, H. The tank has an arm-hole in its back wall to be used in clean ing it out. This arm-hole, when not in use, is closed in an air and water tight manner by means of a disk, I, provided with a diaphragm or packing, i, of India rubber or its equivalent, and tightened by means of a clamp, J. K represents an opening in the back of the stand, through which access may be had to the arm-hole. L designates a vent-tube rising from the waste-tank to the top of the basin, and preventing overflow.
By pulling the plug out of the bottom of the basin the water is allowed to pass down into the waste-tank. The latter cannot overflow to any great extent, as when full the surplus water risesthrough the pipe C back into the basin.
M designates a supply-tank arranged above the basin and furnished with a dischargecock, N.
For convenience two supply-tanks may be provided, and the contents of one heated by means of a spirit-lamp. The tank for hot water must be slightly elevated to admit of the arrangement of the lamp underneath it.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The waste-tank D, provided with the pivoted pipe F and cock E, substantially as specified.
2. The waste-tank D, having an arm-hole closed by means of the clamp J and plate I, and rendered air and water tight by means of the diaphragm i, substantially as specified.
3. The vent-pipe L in combination with the waste-tank D and basin B, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ALFRED H. L'OBTON.
Witnesses:
