To all whom may Concern Be it known that I, JOHN B. BRnssLnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grass Valley, in the county of Sherman and State of Gregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vashbasins and Sinks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to washbasins, sinks or the like, and compreliends the provision of a water container utilized as such, the container being pivotally mounted upon the wall or other suitable supportto assume a horizontal position for use, in a position parallel to the wall of such support when folded.

In carrying out my invention I combine with such a container a waste receiving tank located within the wall or support from view, the tank communicating` with the container and adapted to receive the contents thereof as the container is elevated to its folded position, the tank being piped to the sewer in the usual manner.

One of the chief characteristics of the invention resides in providing the above inentioned waste tank with a closure for controlling the communication between the saine and said container the closure normally cutting off all communication, thus excluding all obiectionable odors from the tank gaining access to the room, the closure being automatically open while the container is being folded to permit the contents thereof to be emptied into the tank.

Another object of importance resides in the fact that the container utilized as either a wash basin or sink is free of any drain or outlet, thus eliminating use of a plug or stopper therefor; while the container when folded conceals the spigot or spigots to prevent the sediments or accumulation of dust thereabout, all of which renders the invention very sanitary.

The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts claimed.

In the drawings forming part of this specification, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein Figure l is a perspective view of the water container projecting from the wall in a horizontal position for use.

Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the container folded in parallelism with the wall.

Fig. 8 is a central vertical sectional view.

Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the invention removed from the wall, with the water container horizontally disposed.

Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view therethrough showing the container partly elevated in a manner of automatically opening the closure for the waste receiving tank.

The invention essentially embodies a water container l0, and a waste receiving tank ll secured to the opposite side of a panel l2, the latter being adapted to be secured upon a wall or other suitable support to lie flush therewith. Consequently, the wall or support A is suitably cut-away to accommodate the waste receiving tank ll which is mounted upon that side of the panel lying next to the wall.

The water container l0 may be constructed from any suitable material and may also vary in design without departing from the spirit of the invention, the container l0 having` secured thereto a transversely disposed rod 13 having its ends journaled in bearings l-l, whereby the container 10 is mounted upon the panel l2- for vertical swinging movement. The container is adapted toassume a horizontal position for use as illustrated in Fig. l, but when its use is not desired it can be readily and easily folded' to lie against the partition l2 in parallelism therewith. A suitable handle 15 is provided for the container 10 for moving the latter to either of its positions. Projecting from the partition l2, are the hot and cold water spigots 16 and 17 respectively, these parts being so disposed with regard to the container l0 as to be concealed from view and completely housed by the container when the latter is in its folded position. By reason of; this fact, the spigots are not `exposed under normal conditions, to accumulate dust or dirt and consequently it does not require much time or labor 'to maintain the parts in a sanitary condition.

The panel l2 and the adjacent wall of the tank 1l are provided with an opening establishing communication between the container 10 and said tank, for the purpose of allowing the container to empty into the tank as the container is swung from its horizontal to its folded position against the panel. Leading from the tank 11 is a waste pipe 18 while supported above the pipe and in spaced relation to the bottom of the tank is a strainer 19 removably seated upon a pluralityL of lugs 20 projecting from the opposed walls of the tank. `With a view of excluding from the room, objectional odors from the tank 11, I provide a pivoted closure 2 1 for controlling the communication between the tank and container, any suitable means being employed to maintain the closure in its closed position when the container islin horizontal position. As shown in this specific instance, a yieldable element 22 is employed for this purpose.

lhile as stated the container may be of any suitable design it is herein shown as being provided with outwardly extending fianges 23 projecting` from one side and the end wall thereof, the fianges effectively engaging the panel about the edges of the opening therein, when the container is in foldedposition to exclude from the room objecti-onal odors from the tank.

For the purpose of automatically swingingthe closure 21, to an opened position when the container 10` is being elevated, I provide the end walls of the container with upwardly and rearwardly extending flanges 24 which when the container is in horizontal position is slightly spaced from the closure 22, but disposed relatively thereto so as to engage the closure when the container is elevated, thus moving the closure to an open position to permit the container to empty into the tank 11. In addition to this purpose, the flanges 211 serve to direct the contents from the container into the tank, as they prevent spilling of the contents over this end of the container. The closure 22 is provided with a handle 25 whereby the closure may be manually opened against the tension of the element 22 while the container is .in horizontal position. Thus access may be readily had to the tank to remove any thing therefrom, that might casually fall into the tank from the container.

Arising from a cleat 26' secured to the rear of the panel 12, is a leaf spring 27 disposed in the path of movement of the cranklike extremity 28 of the rod 13 which piv- -otally supports the container 10. The relative disposition of these parts is such, that the spring 27 engages the extremity 28 of the rod 13 to immovably hold the container 10 in a horizontal position, and when the container is moved to its vertical position, the spring effectively engages the extremity 28 of the rod to hold the container in its folded position. Carried by the container is a hook-like element 30 adapted to coperate with a similar element 31 while pro- 'jecting from the panel 12 to brace the container 10, when the latter is in horizontal position. l/Vhen the latter is lowered to this position, the element 3() is moved into engagement with its cooperating element 31.

lVhile I have shown and described what I consider the preferred embodiment of the invention, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction, and arrangement of parts disclosed, inasmuch as such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.

1. In combination, a fixed support having an opening, a water container pivotally mounted upon one side of the support for vertical swinging movement, a stationary waste lreceiving tank arranged at the opposite side of the support and communicating with the container through said opening, a closure controlling the communication between said opening and mounted for pivotal movement, yieldable means for holding the closure in closed position when the water container is horizontally disposed, means whereby the closure is automatically opened against the tension of said yieldable means when the container is elevated.

2, In combination, a water container. pivotally mounted for vertically swinging movement, a stationary waste receiving tank communicating therewith, a shaft associated with said container for lmovement therewith and including an angular offset extremity, a leaf spring, said spring being disposed in the path of movement of said offset angular extremity of the shaft to engage the latter to hold vsaid container in either vertical or horizontal position. y
