UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
EDMUND BLUNT, OF BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR TO ALICE E. SOHUYLER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR PREVENTING THE ESCAPE 0F SEWER-GAS FROM BASIN-OVERFLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,862, dated April 1, 1879; application filed March 25, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND BLUNT, of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a new and useful device to be applied to wash-basins, bath-tubs, and articles of like character, to'
' Fig. 2, a plan view of the same.
In the drawings like parts of the invention are pointed out by the same letters of reference.
The nature of the present invention con sists in the construction, as more fully hereinafter set forth, of a new and useful device for preventing the escape of sewer-gas, the object of the invention being the production of a device for preventing the escape of sewergas which can be readily applied to the overflows of wash-basins, bath-tubs, and articles of like character, and thus prevent the escape of sewer-gas through the same into the house in which the basin or tub is contained.
To enable those skilled in the arts to make and use my invention, I will describe the same.
A shows a disk of metal or suitable material of proper shape for the purpose intended, made concave on one side and recessed near its outer edge to receive a packing, B, formed of rubber tube or tube made of like material, which is charged or filled with water, the tubing being cemented or fastened in any convenient way within the recess, and a portion of which projects beyond the rear or back portion of the disk A, as clearly shown in the drawings. Through the center of the disk A is passed a shank, E, having at one end the eye E while its opposite end is provided with of sewer-gas into the room in which the wasly basin is through the overflow. The hooks D are attached in the most convenient manner ,7
for their insertion into the openings of which the overflow is composed, and the nut F, the disk A having been properly placed over or in front of the overflow, is tightened or screwed up upon and over the shankE until the packing B is brought sufficiently close to and in contact with the interior of the basin to which the device has been applied to form, as it were, a perfectly tight joint around and over the overflow.
In this position the device will fully prevent the escape of sewer-gas through the overflow into the room in which the wash-basin is contained.
The device is simple, will be found efficient in operation, can be supplied at a low price to the consumer, and the packing B can be easily renewed from time to time, as occasion may require.
Having now set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a device for preventing the escape of sewer-gas, the combination of the following elements: a recessed disk, A,packin g B, shank E, nut F, rod (3, and hooks D, substantially as and for the purposes indicated.
