, BOX 0R GANISTBR.
No. 428,272. Patented May 20, 1890.
' @@MMM ATTORNEY.
. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STEPHEN E. CORNELL, OF BROOKLYN, NEV YORK.
BOX OR CANISTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 428,272, dated May 20, 1890.
Application led August 23, 1889.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN E. CORNELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklymin the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes or Canisters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates especially to that class of boxes or canisters as shown and described in my application yfor Letters Patent Seria-l No. 310,063, allowed June 6, 1889; and it consists of the novel means, hereinafter described, for detachably holding in position in rear of the glass face-plate a wall or partition, forming a backing for one or more layers of crackers or other articles to be exhibited through said plate.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I represents a vertical section of the front portion of a box or canister embodying my invention. Fig. II represents a like section thereof, taken at a right angle to Fig. I. Fig. III represents a horizontal section thereof, omitting the partition. Fig. IV represents a face view of the partition detached.
Similar letters indicate silnilar parts.
The letter A indicates the body of the can, having an open face provided with a glass plate B, and C indicates a partition in rear of and parallel with said face-plate. This partition C, like the body of the box or canister, is made of sheet metal, and it is fitted in a groove or channel f upon the bottom of the box, while it engages with a hinged catch g at the top of the box, so that by the combined effect of said groove and catch said partition is firmly held in position.
Serial No. 321,764. (No model.)
'lhe groove f is formed by the parallel sides of an elongated wire loop I, Which is soldered or otherwise attached to the bottom of the box, and one side of which serves to connect to said bottom. A hinged flap J impinges against the lower part of the glass face-plate B, 'thereby holding said plate in position at that point.
The catch g is composed of a flap of sheet metal, and it is hinged to the top of the box by the same joint o which is used to connect to the box the usual hinged lid K, with the effect of leaving the lid entirely free or unobstructed in its movement, said flap being bent to a shape for engaging a flange son the upper edge of the partition, as shown.
By this construction I obtain a simple and effective means for sustaining the partition in t-he desired position, and one permitting' its removal to afford proper access to the glass face-plate audits fastening devices.
Vhat I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In abox or canister, a glass face-plate, a partition in rear of said plate, a wire loop upon the bottom of the box forming a groove to receive said partition, a hinged Hap forsecuring the face-plate connected with said loop, and a hinged catch at the top of the box to engage'the partition, substantially as and for the purpose described.
STEPHEN E. CORNELL.
W'itnesses:
HENRY GERKEN, CEAS. WAHLERS.
