Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS CARROLL, on MIDDLETOWN, OONNEor'IoUr, AssreNoH rro W. W. WILOOX AND JOSEPH HALL, Je., OE sAME- PLAOE.
lNlPROVED CLEW-THIMBLE.
Specification forming part of Leiters Patent No. 1.!,SI7, dated May 17, 1864.
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS CARROLL, of Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Olew-Thimbles and I do hereby declare lthat the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, referencel bein ghad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 represents afront elevation of a cleW provided with thiniblesA made according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section ofthe same, taken in the planeindieated by the line x x, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in theseveral figures.
This invention consists in the arrangement of a ring or guard in the interior of the elewthimble to iit loosely over the body of the clew in such a manner that the thim ble is conned on the clew sufficiently close to prevent the rope from ehaing against 'the upper portion ofthe ring to which it is attached without changing the relative size of the 'clew and thimble.
To enable others` skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, l will proceed to describe it.
A represents a clew, made of wrought or malleable iron in the usual manner and shape. Itis provided with one or more rings, a, to receive the thimbles B. These thinibles are cast or otherwise produced in the shape of an egg, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and they have to be made of some length, to allow ot' fastening the ropes O' to them. It they should be made round and small, just large enough to tit the rings a, the rope could not conveniently be fastened to them, because it would be impossible to give it so short a turn. By making the thimbles oblong, however, another difficulty I have overcome by the simple addition ot' a ring or guard, c, which is secured to the interior of the thimble B. This guard may be cast with or otherwise attached to the thimble, and it' made in the form shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings it is made to tit the body of theclew loosely and still so that it contines the thimble and prevents the rope passing over the same from chaiing against the upper part ofthe ring o of the clew. Instead of giving to the gua-rd c a circular form, however, a simple pin mightbe passed through the thimble at such adistance below the body of the cleW as to leave to said thimble the required freedom of motion and still conne it sut'tlciently to prevent the rope from coming in contact with the upper part of the ring.
By this simple attachment, the rope passing over the clew-thimble can be used entirely without a proteetingcover, and much labor and expense is saved.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a guard, c, with the interior ot' a cleW-thimble, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
THOMAS CARROLL.
