Be itknown thatI, CHARLES LA Dow, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Albany, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Olasps, of which the following is a specification.

Myinvention relates to that class of clasps especially adapted for use on gaiters, gloves, shoes, and similar articles, consisting, essentially, of iwo separable parts, a pin or post adapted to be fastened to one part of the ar ticle to which the clasp is to be applied, and an eye secured to the other part of the article and adapted to fit over or engage with the pin.

The object of lny invent-ion is to produce a button-like clasp or one in general appearance resembling the ordinary shoe-button, more especially adapted for shoes, which may, however, also be used for a glove or other like fastening.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l shows a view in elevation o'f a gaiter-shoe provided with my improved clamping device or button-clasp. Fig. 2 represents a vertical central section through one of said clasps on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the elastic holding-ring and a vertical section through the button-shank in which said ring is seated, these parts being separate and detached.

The head A of the clasp is preferably shaped like an ordinary shoe-button and comtion, such as the black enamel-like material ordinarily used. This head may be molded or otherwise formed on a thimble or annular shank B of a suitable form. The shank 'is shown as formed with a laterally-projecting flange b-that is to say, the iange is iirst made ferrule-shaped, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, inserted in the upper flapvX of the slice-upper, and then upset to rivet the head thereto, as shown in Fig. 2. An'annular recess c in the shank receives an ordinary clamping-ring C. The head A is made hollow, or, in other words, is provided with a recess to receive a catch, pin, or headed post D, which is shown as made of a bulbous shape Vadapted to be inserted in the recess in the head A, where it is retained by the elastic ring. sunk, as shown, to receive the flat head of a piu E, driven through the under flap Y of the shoe-upper and into the post D, thus securing a smooth surface on the under side of the upper and a firm connection with the post. The pin E is shown as made thin, sharp, and tapering, so that it may readily be inserted into or removed from the post, in order that the position of these parts may be shifted to fit the fastening to the foot of the wearer without materially marring the appearance of the upper.

Instead of using an elastic ring in the manner herein described, any well-known equivalent device accomplishing the `functions of the ring may of course be employed.

I claim as my inventionl. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set 'fort-h, of the hollow composition head A, the tubular shank upon which it is molded, the elastic ring seated in said shank, and the headed post D.

2. The combination, substantially as hereinbet'ore set fort-h, of the hollow composition head A, the annular shank upon which it is molded, the elastic ring, the headed post D, and the securing-pin E.

3. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of the hollow head, the flanged and recessed shank, the flap secured between the flange and head, the elastic ring seated in the recess of the shank, the headed post, its countersunk flange, the headed securing-pin, whose head enters the countersink in the iiange of the post for the purpose described, and the iiap secured between the head and pin.

4. The ianged socket or tubular shank and the composition head molded thereon, the shank being adapted to be attached to the material to which the clasp is to 'be applied, in combination with a headed post, also adapted to be attached to the material and to enter said socket to secure the two together, substantially as set forth.
