' WATER SHIELD FOR WINDOW BRUSHES. No. 426,744. Patented Apr. 29 1890.

A 7TOHNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC STINER, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y,
WATER-SHIELD FOR WINDOW-BRUSHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 426,744, dated April 29, 1890.
'Applitation filed October 23, 1889. Serial No. 327,925. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISAAC STINER, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Tater-Shield for WVindow-Brushes and Similar Articles, ofwhich the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a water-shield for window-brushes and similar articles, and has for its object to provide a simple, durable, and cheap device capable of convenient and expeditious attachment to any brush-handle or to the handle of any window-cleaning implement, and which when attached will effectually prevent water from dropping from the implement and from passing down the handle to the hand or person of the operator.
The invention consists in the novel construction of the device, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device applied to a brush-handle. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the device detached. Fig. 3 is a plan view, and Fig. 4 is a diametrical section on line :20 03 of Fig. 3.
In carrying out the invention the device is preferably constructed of rubber or of a similar elastic material, which is molded or otherwise manipulated to producea cup 10, the said cup being ordinarily of circular contour, having a convex under side 11 and an inwardlycurved upper edge 12. In the center of the bottom of the cup an opening 13 is formed, and the said central portion of the cup surrounding the opening is curved upward to form an interior conical portion 14, as best shown in Fig. 4:. The cup is also preferably provided with an annular flange 15, integral with its outer side face, and at one point in the side of the cup below the flange the said side face and the bottom are flattened, as
illustrated at 16in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, and in the flattened side surface an aperture or opening 17 is produced, which flattened surfaces and opening constitute, virtually, a spout for the delivery of the water contained in the cup, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
In applying the device to a handle the handle 18 of the implement is madeto pass down through the central opening 13, and as the material of which the cup is made is elastic the device may be readily fitted to either a thick or a thin stick. In attaching the device to the handle of a brush or other implement the spout is preferably located upon the inner side of the handle or upon that side adjacent to the bristles of the brush.
.In operation when the brush is in use 'in' cleaning a window, for instance, the water* flowing down the handle from the brush above the device enters the cup and passes 011? through the spout-opening 17. In the event that the qu antity of water supplied to the cup is greater than the opening 17 will discharge and the water should overflow in consequence, the flange 15 will effectually prevent the water from passing down in contact with the bottom of the device, and from thence along the handle to the operators hand or person, as the said flange forms awater-shed and directs the flow in the direction of the inward inclination of the handle and away from the operator.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Paten'tr 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a water-shield for windowcleaning imple ments, consisting of an elastic cup provided with an upwardly-extending essentially-conical central portion open at its upper end and an outlet in one side, substantially as shown and described. I
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a water-shield for window-cleaning implements, consisting of a cup formed of elastic material provided with an upwardly-extending central essentially-conical portion open at the top and also provided with an outlet in one side and with an annular flange integral with the outer face at the side, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
ISAAC STINER.
