Description

hinge, c.
,UNI-TED STATES 'PATENT OFFICE.
W. E. ROSE, OF WAUKON, IOWA.
4COMBINATION 0F PEN-HOLDER, PEN-CASE AND MONEY-SAFE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 42,599, dated May 3, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W. E. Rosin, of Wankon, in the county of Allamakee and State ot' Iowa, have invented a new and usetul Oomand exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my invention, shown in use; Fig. 2, an open view of the same, showing the interior; Fig. 3, an edge view ot' the same.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The object ot` this invention is to obtain a portable device for the pocket or one which may be suspended on aneck-chain, and be capable of being used as a pen-holder, pencase, and Portemonnaie, and at the same time be simple'in construction and possess advantages which will be hereinafter enumerated.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a case or shallow box of a circular form, and constructed of either wood, metal, or other suitable material. The lid c of the box-is at one side of it, and connected to the bodyor main part b by means of a The body or main part b of this box or case, as well as the lid a, has an oblong recess, d, made in it to receive one or more metallic pens, c, and said parts also have recesses f, made in them to receive coin, postage, currency, or bank-notes. The lid c may be secured in a closed state by any suitable catch or fastening, g.
In the edge ofthe case or box A there is made a hole, h, which communicates with the recess j'. This hole is designed to receive a pen, eywhen the device is used as a'penholder, as shown in Fig. 1.
- The case or box, if constructed of wood, may have small metallic knobs, i, fitted to it `at points where it rests upon the paper. rI he device when thus used is grasped by the thumb and first and second tin gers ot the hand, and the ease or box may rest upon the papel' orbe held free from the-paper, if desired. The metallic knobs admit ofthe case or box sliding freely over the paper when the former rests upon the latter.
The case or box used as a pen-holder possesses advantages over the ordinary ones. It serves as a rest for the hand, and if the latter is unsteady or tremulous it greatly aids the writer, enabling him to Write much plainer or more legible than he otherwise could. The
pen also will always have the proper pitch or' slope, which is seldom the case with the ordinary holder, and will be held square, the hand not being liable to be turned over on its side, as with the ordinary holder. The hand also. will not be so liable to cramp or become p fatigued. When the case or box in writingis held up from the paper, the operator has perfect control over it, and it' the writer by long use or custom is inclined to turn his hand on its side in writing, the pen can be so adjusted in its hole h as to admit of this and still have its point or nib rest squarely on the paper.
The case or box may 4have a ring, j, attached to it to allow a neck-chain to pass through, so that it may be worn like an eyeglass or watch.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A circular case or box provided with a recess to contain a pen when not in use, and also provided with a hole to receive the pen when in use, all arranged to form a combined pencase and pen holder, substantially as described.
2. The coin or money recess in said box to form a combined pen-case, pen-holder, and porte-monnaie, substantially as set forth.
