To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD E. J OSEF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps for Molders Flasks, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a suitable clamp for molders flasks or other purposes which is capable of exerting the necessary force of a screw at the point required and of being instantly released from the screw, so that the clamping-pieces may be easily moved to and fro to accommodate them to flasks or other articles of different depths, whereby the force of a screw is only used Where a clamping power is required, all of which will be fully and clearly hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an inside elevation of the clamp. Fig. 2 is an outside elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a partial enlarged inside elevation with the sliding portion removed. Figs. 4: and 5 are sectional elevations illustrating the operation, and Fig. 6 shows a modified form of the device.
Referring to the drawings, a is one of the clamping-bars, having at one end a clampingpiece a, and is provided with a longitudinal slot a and depressions a a at each side of the slot, forming a slideway in which the other clampingbar b slides. At the open end of the clamping-bar a is a projecting case at, having an interiorcurved recess a and the curved open sockets to a on either side of the recess a The clamping-bar 1) consists of a bar adapted to slide to and fro in the slideway a a and is provided on its back with a longitudinally arranged segmental female screw-thread b and upon the opposite side a longitudinal central rib b and at outer end is the clamping-piece b 0 is a cylindrical portion provided with trunnions O 0', one of which is provided with a lever or-thumb-piece C Upon the portion 0 is a segmental male screw-thread G which screw only extends part way around, being cut away even with the surface of the cylindrical portion 0 at 0 (see Fig. 3,) so that when the screw-thread O is in engagement with the female screw h, as shown in Fig. 5, the clamping-pieces are drawn to or from each other by the power of a screw while turning the cylindrical portion 0 either way by means of the lever C and when disengaged, as
shown in Fig. 4, by turning the lever 0 back far enough to release the male screw from the female screw the clamping-bar a is free to slide either way in the slideway a a that is, when the portion of the cylinder 0 from which the screw-thread C is cut away is opposite the segmental female screw, there is nothing to hold the clamping-bars from being moved easily and adjusted to the article to be clampedafter which the power of the screw is applied by turning the lever C so as to bring the screws into engagement, as before mentioned.
In Fig. 6 I have shown the device provided with fastening-lugs d, with which to secure it to the edge of a carpenters or other bench for the purpose of securing or clamping an object between the clamping-pieces.
From the foregoing description it will be noticed that the power of a screw is only exerted for a short distance, and only at the point when a screw-power is required to clamp an object tightly.
I claim as my invention- 1. A clamp for molders flasks or other purposes, consisting of a slotted bar provided with a clamping-piece at one end and at the opposite end a case a in combination with a bar constructed to slide longitudinally back and forth along the slotted bar, and provided with a clamping-piece at one end and at the back with a segmental female screw, and a cylinder 0, having a lever C mounted in the case (1 and provided with a male screwthread C extending partly around it, so that it gears in with the female screw during a part of its rotation only, whereby when the lever is turned over to one side it engages with the female screw, and when turned back the other Way it is released from the screw, so that both clamping-pieces may be easily and freely moved longitudinally to or from each other, substantially as described.
