To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that we, EARL C. VlLooXsoN and ERIC Swanson, citizens of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Jewelers Vises, of which the following is a specification. j
v rllhis invention relates to jewelers vises, the main object of the invention being to provide a vise of this character by which material or objects may be securely clamped and brought into any desiredposition for convenience in working upon them.
A further .object of the invention is to provide a vi'se having a plurality of clamping faces for use in holding different kinds of materials' or objects, and in which the vise proper may be removed from its support and used as a hand vise.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangelnent of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which r- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through a jewelers vise constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical. transverse section on the line 2-2 o-f Fig; 1. Fig. 3 is a face view of the relatively stationary clamping jaw.
The vise comprises a body or support 1 having a clamping surface 2 and provided with a depending angular' bracket 3 carrying a screw L1 having a swivele'd or stationary clamping head -for coperation with the surface 2, whereby the device may be secured to a work bench or table;
Thevbody or support 1 is formed with a casing sleeve or barrel 6 in which is fitted a jaw member 7, of circular form in cross section, and provided with a square orrectangular clamping head 8 at the forward end thereof. rlhe `said jaw member 7 isk also provided with a socket 9 opening through its forward end and closed at its rear end by a wall 10.
The member 7 is provided with a circumferential groove 11 receiving a lockingk or clamping pin 12. This pin 12 is movable vertically in a guide passage 13 formed in the body 1 and is formed with a lower beveled `end 14 engaged by the beveled inner end 15 of a threaded pin orshaft 16 operating in a horizontal threaded opening 17 in the body 2 and provided at its outer end with a hand lever 18. By turning this lever in one direction or the other the shaftr16 may be moved in or out to throw the beveled surfaces 14C and 15 into and outof engagement to thereby elevate the pin 12 to clamp the member 7 against longitudinal or rotary movement or to release said member 7 j for rotary movement within or removal from the casing 6. y e Y A second jaw member 19 is provided with a clamping head 20 corresponding inform to the head 8 and with a shank 21 which is fitted to slide telescopically within the socket 9, to permit the twoclamping heads to be adjusted with relation to each other. A key 22, preferably formed of round wire, is seated within a groove23in the base of the socket 9 and is provided with a bentk end 24 engaging an opening 25 in the member 7 whereby it is heldY from longitudinal or r0- tary movement. In the shank 21 is formed a groove 26 receiving the key, thus forming a feathering connection between the two jaws whereby the jaw member 19 is permitted to slide within the jaw member 7, but is normally held from rotary movement relative thereto. It will be observed, however, that the key 22 is of less length than the groove 26 and terminates a distance in rear of the forward end of the member 7, from which it willbe apparent that when the jaw member 19 is moved outward or forward to an abnormal position, z'. e., to a point where the end 24 of the key or feathery 22 passes out of the groove 26, the rear end of the shank 21 of said jaw member 19 will lie in advance of the key and be free for rotation in the forward end of the socket 9, thusallowing the jaw member 19 to be rotated independently of the jaw member 7. l The jaw member 19 is pro-vided Ywith a bore or passage 27 through which extends an operating rodor shaft 28 having an annular groove 28' receiving an adjustable retaining pin or screwV 30 on the adjustable jaw member, by which the rod is permitted to have rotary movement but is held from longitudinal movement and yet ,may be detached when occasion requires. The forward end of the rod has a head 31 in which is slidably tted a handle bar 3 2, whereby said rod 28 may be operated, The rear` end ofthe rod 28 is provided with threads 83 engaging a threaded opening 34C in the wall 10,
whereby the movable jaw may be adjusted in and out.
The rectangular head S of the jaw member 7 is provided along its margins with clamping faces 35, 36, 37 and 38. The face 35 is preferably integral with the head, which is made of soft steel, while the faces 36, 37 and 38 are composed of detachable strips secured in position by screws or other fastenings 39 and are preferably and respectively formed of hard steel, copper and indurated fiber, by which a series of clamping surfaces are provided for holding various objects or kinds of materials without injury and with the necessary gripping force. The head 20 of the jaw member is recessed to receive a clamping strip 40 detachably secured thereto by similar fastenings 41. By making the strips 36, 37, 38 and l() detachable interchangeable' strips of different materialsmay be employed according to the character of the work to be handled.
In practice, an article or piece of material to be held may be placed between the opposed gripping faces of the jaws and the movable jaw adjusted to clamp the same. The work may thus be held in a fixed position, or by turning the lever 18 to permit the pin 12 to drop the jaw member 7 may be released to allow the two jaws to be turned within the sleeve 6 to bring the work tio any angular position mostl convenient to the operator. By adjustino the jaw member 19 outward until it clears the key 22 and then releasing the pin 12, the jaw member 7 may be turned to present any of its clamping faces for cooperation with the clamping face of the jaw member 19. At any time by releasing` the pin 12 the jaw member 7 may be unlocked to permit of the removal of the vise proper from the holder so that it may be employed as a hand vise. It will thus be seen that the invention provides a vise which affords manifold conveniences and which is therefore, of value to jewelers and others working under different conditions on different objects or materials.

socketed'jaw removably androtatably mounted in said support, a single locking means for holding said jaw against removal and also in any of its positions of axial adjustment, a second jaw slidable within the socket of the first named jaw, connecting means between the jaws to normally permit said second aw to have longitudinal without rotary movement and also to permit it to be released within its range of longitudinal movement for relative rotary movement of the jaws, vand an operating screw journaled in the secondl named jaw and in threaded engagement with the first named jaw.

A jewelers visev comprising a support, a jaw removably and rotatably mounted therein and provided with an angular clamping head having a plurality of clamping surfaces, means for holding said jaw against removal and in any of its positions of axial adjustment, a second. jaw having a clamping V their clamping surfaces toward and from 10 each other.
