To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN GEORGE BARKE, a subject of His Majesty the King of England, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lincoln, Kingdom of England, have invented certain new and useful improvements in and Connected with Bencli-Vises, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bench vises and has for its chief object to provide improved means whereby the aws are locked when adjusted. By these means filing or other work may be quickly easily and accurately carried out which has heretofore been impossible or awkward with the ordinary type of parallel bench vise, in
which the jaws are not adapted to be turned vertically, owing to the fact that large pieces or articles of work cannot be clamped and held properly between the jaws of the vise. It often happens that the vise is too small or the tightening screw or sliding stem of the outer jaw too near to the gripping edges of the jaws to allow large pieces of work to be held vertically in the vise, thus causing great inconvenience to the workman and inaccuracies in t-he work carried out.
Another object of the invention is to provide a vise of the kind described with improved means whereby it can be readily turned bodily on its base plate to any desired angle in relation to its normal position and locked in its various positions.
Referring to the accompanying drawings Figure l is a vert-ical section of my improved vise; Fig. 2 is an end elevation; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 4L is an elevation of the adjusting nut and collar.
The rear jaw L of the vise is provided with a backwardly extending sleeve or stem b which is rotatably mounted in the body c of the vise, and is held in any angular position, after the jaw a has been turned, by means of a nut al which screws upon its rear end and abuts against and holds a collar e slidably keyed to the sleeve against the rear end of the vise body, said collar e and body c having interlocking teeth or clutch members f. By loosening the nut cl and withdrawing the collar e from the vise body o the jaw and its sleeve may be turned to any new position, such as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and then locked in similar manner by the said nut Z and collar e. The front jaw g of the vise is also provided with Specification of Letters Patent.

The body of the vise is rotatably con nected to the base plate and as shown in the drawings a locking plate p is fixed to the bottom of the body by bolts Q and mounted to turn with same in relation to the base plate r. The locking plate p is formed with notches or recesses s on its periphery with which a cam or eccentric disk t, pivot-ally mounted on the base plate and provided with a handle t is adapted to engage and fix the lookin plate p and the vise in any desired angu ar position after they have been turned on the base plate.
The changeable face plate u of the jaws a and Q are formed with co-acting grooves or recesses QJ of such shape that rods, tubes or bars of round, square or other cross sect-ion, or other articles of similar shape, may be securely gripped between them.
It will be understood how, by the use of this improved vise, duplicate gages or other duplicate parts may be held between the jaws and iled together on three sides or edges without having to remove them from the vise and altering for each position.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is A bench vise comprising a base having a horizontally disposed tubular body portion, a sleeve rotatably mounted therein and provided at one end with a jaw portion abutting one end of said body and at the other end with a threaded extension projectn ing beyond the said body, a collar slidably keyed to said extension, the adjacent faces In testimony whereof I have signed this of said collar and said body being,- formed specification in the presence of two subscrib- 10 with interlocking clutch faces, a nut threading Witnesses.
