VISE FOR HOLDING THREADED NIPPLES.

Be it known that I, FRANK KUTTLER, asubject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vises for Holding Threaded Nipples, of which the following is a specification, reference bein ghad thereinr ing nipples after the thread has been cut at one end to screw the nipple into a socket or a fitting-such, for instance, as the ordinary elbow. This fitting is then placed in a vise, and the thread is then cut upon the opposite end of the nipple in the usual'way. The objection to employing a device of this kind is that in the operation of cutting the thread on the nipple the said nipple will be so tightly screwed into the fitting that diiiiculty is often experienced in removing it and there is danger of injuring the thread.

My present invention consists in ay device for holding nipples, comprising a threaded socket formed in separable sections, which, while serving the purpose of securely holding the nipple while operated upon, are at the same time capable of being drawn apart to release the nipple when'completed.

The inventionfurther consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my nipple-holding vise with the front plate detached. Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section showing a nipple held in the vise. Fig. 4 is a similar section showing the jaws separated.

A is a head, preferably of circular form and provided with a rearwardly-extending shank B, adapted to be secured in a vise or to any suitable standard. The head'A is provided on its front face with radial slots, in which are slidingly secured the movable sections O C' of the socket. Each section preferably co mprises the shank a, which engages with the slot in the head, and the head portion b, in

which the socket proper is formed. The two sections 'when moved together form a complete socket, which is interiorly threaded to correspond to the proper nipple which the socket is intended to'hold. Each section is also provided with a shoulder or stop c, against which the end of the nipple will bear.

`The sections C C are adapted to be drawn apart or moved together and when in the latter position to be locked. The means which I have shown for accomplishing this consist of the annular plate D, rotatively secured upon the head A and provided with the recesses E, in which the ends of the Shanks d project. cl are cams in said recesses, which are adapted to engage with grooves in the Shanks a. The plate D is provided o.n its periphery with a pin F, with which a suitable operating-handle G may be engaged, and to limit the movement of the plate adjustable stops, such as H, are preferably secured to the head A and which extend into the path of the pin F on opposite sides thereof.

For securing the sections in their slots in the head a face-plate I is provided, which is secured to the front face of the head A and serves to retain both the sections O and C and the annular plate D in position.

To provide means for readily detaching the sections O and O', I preferably provide the plate I with radial slots J, adapted when registered with the shanks a of the sections to permit of said sections being detached' or removed froin the head. The bolts or screws for securing the plate I to the head pass through slots e in said plate, so that by loosening said bolts the plate may be given a limited rotary movement, this movement being sufficient to permit of registering the slots .I with the Shanks d or of turning the plate into position, when said Shanks will be secured in their slots.

The device being constructed as shown and described, in operation the nipple having one end threaded is engaged in the socket formed by the closed sections, after which the thread on the opposite end may be cut by any suitable dies. The operator then rotates the plate D by means of the handle Gr into a position where the cam d will cause the sections O and O to separate, thereby releasing the nipple.

Should the operator desire to secure a nip- IOO ple of dierent size in the vise, by loosening the plate I and giving it a partial rotation the slots J will be registered with the shanks 01so that the sections C and C may be removed and similar sections having smaller or larger sockets may be placed in their stead, after which the plate I may be turned to again lock them in position.

It will be understood that the nipple is not clamped, but is held from rotation in the socket by reason of the taper of its thread and also by the shoulders or the abutments c, which will prevent the nipple Vfrom being screwed in beyond a certain point. Thus it is not necessary to clamp the sections of the socket against the nipple, but only to move them into their closed position. This prevents all danger of injuring the nipple by bringing too great pressure to bear against its sides, as might be necessary if the nipple were held from rotation by the clamping eifeet of the sections.

lVhat I claim as my invention is l. A nipple-holdin g vise comprising a head having radial slots formed therein, a threaded socket formed in sections each section comprising the portion b and the outwardly-extending shank a slidingly secured in one of said radial slots, an annular plate surrounding and journaled upon said head having recesses into which the ends of said shanks project and cams in said recesses engaging with said Shanks, and a retaining-plate for said Shanks and annular plate. 1

A nipple-holding vise comprising a head a threaded socket formed in two sections each having a shank slidingly engaging a radial slot in said head, an annular cam-plate in engagement With said shanks for opening and closingA said sections, and a retaining-plate rota-tively adj nstably secured to said head and having slots adapted to be registered with said Shanks to permit of removing said sections.
