H. GONE. W001) WORKING CLAMP. N0. 424,960. Patented Apr. 8, 1890.
N. PETERS Phclwuthnm r. Wad-Angina an UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
I-IIRAM GONE, OF ONEIDA, NEW YORK.
WOOD-WORKING CLAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 424,960, dated April 8, 1890.
Application filed October 31, 1889- Serial No. 828,747. (No model.)
To 00% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HIRAM GONE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oneida, in the county of Madison and State of N ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vood-W'orking Clamps; andI do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Wlll enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in adjustable woodworking clamps; and it has for 1ts ob ect to simplify and cheapen the constructlon and to render more efficient, durable, and serviceable in operation this class of devices.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same conslsts 1n the peculiar combinations and in the novel c011- struction, arr ngement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully herelnafter described, shown in the accompanying drawlngs, and then specifically defined in the appended 1m. lhe invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, wlth the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part ofthis specification, like letters of reference indicating like parts throughout both views, and in which drawings Figure 1 is a perspective View of a clamping device constructed in accordance w th my invention, the adjustable sectlon being shown as locked. Fig. 2 1s a central vertical longitudinal section of the same, 1n which the position occupied by the lock1ng-key When the parts are unlocked 1s indicated by dotted fizference nowzbeing had to the details of the drawings by letter, A and B, respectwely, represent the two sections of the device. The section A carries at its free end the vertical post or upright 0, through which 1s passed the vise-screw D, provided at its outer end with an operating lever or handle E, and having a cla1nping-bl0ck F connected with its opposite end by means of a universal joint, as shown.
The upper face of the horizontal strip A which forms the body of the movable section A, is provided with a series of serrations or notches a a, which notches are adapted to engage the correspondingnotches b 1), formed upon the under face of the inner end of the section B, when thrown into engagement with said notches, as hereinafter specified.
J is an open-ended casing secured to and depending from the inner end of the section B, said casing being of a size sufficient to permit the strip A to be passed loosely through it and moved freely therein in a longitudinal direction. The outer end of the section B is provided with an upright or standard K, which serves as one of the jaws of the clamp.
The key L is a substantially wedge-shaped piece of either wood or metal, which is .cut away upon its under side, so as to form the space M adjacent to the smaller end of the key, the length of this cut-away portion corresponding with the width of the casing J.
The operation of the clamp will be readily understood. \Vhen it is desired to change the point of adjustment of the parts, the key L is moved so as to occupy the portion shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The sections having been unlocked, may be moved to the desired point of adjustment, when by forcing the key securely into place within the casing, the notches a are thrown into engagement with the notches b upon the section B, and the sections securely locked together.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-
As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described clamping device, the same comprising, in combination, a movable section having a horizontal body portion notched upon its upper face, provided at its free end with an upright having a vise screw passed there through, a section B, carrying at its outer end an upright K and having notches 11 formed upon its under face adjacent to its free end, the casing J depending from the In testimony whereof Iaffix mysignntui'e in inner end of the section B and adapted to presence of two witnesses. loosely receive the strip A and the substani 1 tially wedgeshaped key L, adapted for use IHRAM CONL' 5 in looking the sections in their adjusted po- VVitneSses sitions, substantially as and for the purpose JACOB A. GAUL,
described. MATHIAS CAMPBELL.
