RUCHING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 424,732, dated April 1, 1890.
Application filed May 28, 1889. Serial No. 312,439. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CLARA B. SIMPSON, of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain Improvements in Ruching, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in ruching; and the object I have in view is to provide a ruching that will be adapted to be worn in the neck of the dress or in the sleeves and will retain its position with but a single fastening, which secures its ends.
The invention consists in a ruching having the band which forms the base portion thereof provided with a roughened or sanded outer surface.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is an elevation of a piece of ruching embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the end of a dress-sleeve, showing the manner of using the ruching therein. Figs. 3 and at are details. 7
In the drawings, 2 represents the plaited or quilled portion of the ruching, and 4. represents the band or base to which the plaited portion is secured. I provide the band 4 with an outer roughened or sanded surface 6. This surface may be made by sewing or securing a strip of sanded paper or cloth to the band of the ruching, as shown in Fig. 3, or the sand or similar substance may be secured upon the outer surface of the band by means of glue or other suitable adhesive material.
In using this ruching a strip of the desired length is placed inside of the sleeve of the dress or inside of the collar of the dress, and its ends are secured by means of a pin or other suitable fastening. The roughened surface of the band lies against the inner surface of the collar or sleeve, and retains the ruching in the proper position without any other fastening. I do not confine myself to these uses of the ruching, as it may be used in other places and for any purpose for which it is adapted.
By the term ruching, as used in this specification, I include any kind of trimming attached or secured to a band.
I claim as my invention As a new article of manufacture, a ruching having a band provided upon the side which is to come in contact with the garment with a roughened surface capable of causing the band to adhere to such garment, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
