ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES A. TURNBULL, OF ESSEX COUNTY, NElV JERSEY.
CLASP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 424,516, dated April 1, 1890.
Serial No. 314,965. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES A. TURNBULL, a citizen of the United States, residing in Essex county, New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clasps or Fastening Devices for Packages, Bundles, and similar Articles, of which the following is a full description.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings illustrates the two rings and the position they occupy when in place. Fig. 2 shows the two constructed in oblong shape. Fig. 3 shows the same with one of the rings extended into a handle.
A is a ring, to one side of which is attached a tape or cord, intended to pass around a package or bundle to secure and hold the same. B is another ring, which lies in the position as shown in the drawings, one side overlapping the ring A and the other projecting beyond it. The cord or cape 0, attached at one end to the ring A, after passing around the bundle passes first over the outer end of ring B, thence under the side of ring A opposite that to which it is attached, thence under and over the other side of ring B, thence between the adjacent sides of the two rings,
under ring A, and out over the opposite side of ring B, thus holding the two rings together, and by pulling the end of the tape or cord the rings form a bight, which holds the tape and secures the package. It is not necessary that these rings should be circular; but they may be made in an oblong or parallelogram form, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and when it is desired to release the bundle it may be done by sliding the two rings together by the thumb and fingers of one hand. A modification of the device may be made by providing the ring B with a handle I), as shown in Fig. 3. The device operates in the Way described to tighten the bundle, and the handle I) is used to draw back the ring B to loosen the tape. This handle may be constructed solid with the ring, or separate, or hinged, and may be made of the same or other suit-able material.
What I claim is- 1. A clasp comprising atape having a ring A, secured to one end, and a free ring B, loosely mounted upon the tape and adapted to be laid upon the ring A, and which is connected thereto when in use by passing the tape over the end of ring B, down through said ring, under ring A, up through said ring over the forward end of ring B, and down through ring A again, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a fastening device, the rings A and B, the latter lying over the former, but free of attachment thereto and provided with a handie, as b, in combination with a tape or cord attached to one side of ring A, and passing around and over the outer end of ring B, thence under the opposite end of ring A, thence under and over the other side of ring B, and thence out under ring A, substantially as shown.
