7 v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. COLE, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
ADJUSTABLE VlSE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,737, dated March 18,1890.
Application filed April 26, 1889. Serial No. 308,735. (No model.)
T0 ctZZ whom it may concern.-
citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton, State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Bench-Vises, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to that type of vises which are adjustable to different heights relatively to a work-bench; and it has for its objects to simplify the construction of such devices, to provide novel means for vertically guiding and adjusting the vise, to improve the structure whereby infinitesimal vertical adjustments can beobtained and the inner vise-j aw be rigidly locked against any rising or falling movement, and to preserve the inner jaw in true vertical alignment by preventing lateral movement thereof. To accomplish all these objects my invention involves the novel features of construction, the combination or arrangement of parts, and the principles of operation hereinafter, described in detail, and specificallyset forth by the claim, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved vise, showing portion of a work-bench. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line y y, Fig. 1 and Fig. 4 is a sectional viewtaken on the line at at, Fig. 1.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe the same in detail, referring to the drawings, wherein The letter A indicates a bench-top and B a benchdeg, having upper and lower vertical slots b b, and a pair of parallel guide-strips b, on which is'adapted to rise and fall a screwnut F, which at its inner end bears against the bench-leg and at its sides engages the eral displacement. The guide-bar nearest the end of the bench is provided with a vertical slot h, through which passes a screw or screwrod I, firmly secured at its inner end in the edge of the inner vise-jaw, and on its outer end portion carrying a clamping thumb-nut i, to rest against the slotted guide-bar, in such manner that by loosening the nut the vise can be adjusted vertically to proj ect more or less above the plane of the bench-top, and then by tightening the nut the inner visej aw willbe rigidly locked in its adjusted position and held against any rising or falling movement. The slotted guide-bar and the clamping nut-and screw provide for infinitesimal vertical adjustments of the vise, which is a very desirable feature, and this, in connection with the rigid locking of the inner vise jaw by the simple means described, renders the device more desirable than Vises which are adjusted vertically by pawl-andratchet mechanism.
The outer vise-jaw is movable to and from the inner jaw by an adj Listing-screw E, engagin g the sliding nut F, and as the vise is raised and lowered the screw and nut move in unison therewith. The lower end of the outer jaw is provided with the guide G, having perforations for the stop-pin g. M
The parallel guide-bars not only accurately guide the' inner vise-jaw and prevent its lateral movement, but one of the guide-bars I serves for the passage of the screw and as an abutment for clamping the inner jaw in a rigidly-locked position.
The vise can readily be adj Listed to bring its upper end on a level with the bench-top, or it can be adjusted with nicety and accuracy to any height within the limits of the slots in the guide-bar and bench-leg.
If desired, one of the guide-bars B may be provided with a tongue h, engaging a groove in the inner jaw C, to aid in guiding and steadying the latter butt-his is not indispensable. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is r 1. The combination, with a slotted benchleg, of the vertical parallel guide-bars prothrough the slot in one of the guide-bars and engaging the edge of the inner vise-jaw, the clamping-nut on the screw for vertically adjusting the inner jaw and rigidly locking it against rising and falling movements, and the outer vise-jaw having means to move it to and from the described.
2. The combination, with a bench-leg having a vertical slot and a pair of guide-strips on its inner side, of the vertical parallel guide-bars extending outwardly from the leg and one provided with a vertical slot the inner vise-jaw located between and vertically guided by the parallel guide-bars, the clampinner jaw, substantially as.
