The primary objects of the invention are the The top H is removably secured to the left provison of a combination work bench and tool and right end walls 6 and 3 by screws J l and, kit which is quite compact, conveniently carried for a purpose hereinafter fully described, extends as a unit, equipped with tools and other accesm at the two ends substantially beyond the walls 6 series required for most wood-working operaand i as indicate'dby projecting end portions H? tions, linoleum block-carving, miscellaneous and H home repairs, etc., and producible at a low-manu- The boxelike structure which serves as a some factu-ring cost. bination work bench and tool kit is designed for The annexed drawing and the following deiii use upon any suitable and readily available supscri-ption set forth in detailcertain means illusport such as a house table and is provided with trating the improved combination portable work rubber feet 25 downwardly extended from the bench and tool kit, such means disclosing, howbase and serving as a resilient support both ever, only one of the variousforms in which the to dampen vibration and noise and to obviate principle of the'invention may be embodied. in ina-rring of the surface of the table or other me- In said annexed drawing: din-m serving as a support for the device.
Figure 1 is a top plan of the improved combi- The front of the top 1 l is provided with a'hard nation portable work bench and toolkit; wood facing strip 43 secured to the top plate "Figure -2 is a front elevation; proper by screws it and projected downwardly i llfi .3 is anelevation of the left-hand end; somewhat beyond the bottom of the top I I as Figure 4 is a fragmentary transverse section clearly indicated in Figure 4, except for a portaken in the plane indicated by the line 4-4, Figtion thereof clearly indicated in Figure 2, which ure 2; is notched so as to allow for a depth of drawer Figure 5 is anelevation-of the right-hand end; Hi substantially equal to the distance between Figure 6 is a plan, with the top plate or work no the top of the -base 5 and the bottom of the top board pr per remov d, showi Partic a the H provisions for storing anassortment of tools in Secured to the base'B-by a screw '36 and spaced the combination device; somewhat inwardly of the left-hand wall 6 is a Figure 7 is a persp'ectiye upon an enlarged block '35 whose front edge is aligned with the scale, of a part of the devic serving both as a :a: front of the base 5 and flush with the hard wood miter box and also as a part of the front wall of trim surface portion or facing strip is of the the combination device; top i i, this block 36 servinga purpose hereinafter Figure 8 is a perspective showing the formafully described; as also, the space 38 formed betion and relative positioning of a certain cast tween the left-hand wall 6 and the block 36'.
having a base 5, a left-hand wall 5, a right-hand so through the body of the vise block 12 and enwall a rear wall 8 and a top i i. To complete gages a T-shaped cast metal block 2 3 whose leg 24' the box and make of the same a complete housslidably engages the Walls of the space 33 and ing, membe s are provided forming a front wall, whose head slidably en a s ope D aligned disposed between the base 5 and the top It, and slots 28 and 2%? formed respectively in the opposthese members consist of a miter block I ii extend- ":5 ing face portions of the left-hand wall 6 and the I 3 7 block 36. The threaded stem 21 extends at its rear end into the space 38 and there also extends into this space 38 a guide rod 32 which is mounted at its front end in the vise block l2, and passes through the leg and head of theT-shaped metal block 24. The rear face of the vise block 12 is recessed to receive a washer 34 retained by a cotter pin 35, and the guide rod 32 which is forced into the vise block 1.2 and thus secured therein by a pressed fit is further secured by a pin 33 passed thereinto from the front of the vise block'l2.
It is evident from the aforegoing description that the vise block 12 is readily mounted on and removed from the device, by removing the top I l, and sliding the T-shaped cast metal block up in the slots 28 and 29 and the space 38.
The miter box [9 is formed with suitable miter and square slots l9, as well understood by those I skilled in the art, and is also formed with a work support ledge 19 which also serves the additional function, when the miter box I9 is mounted in the device as a part of the front wall thereof, Figure 6, of a stop to prevent the shoving of the miter box beyond its designed position as a part of the front wall of the device, this stop means 19 engaging a drawer guide 22 secured to the top face of the base 5 'and'a shoulder 23 formed in the block 36 by notching a forward portion of the inside face of said block36.
' The drawer I5 is formed with a knob 13 and the miter box 19 with a knob 28, respective latches l1 and 2| for the drawer l5 and the miter box [9 being pivotally mounted upon the front face of the base 5. v
Mounted in the top H is a device 14 forminga stop or abutment for work mounted on the top I I,
this device simulating a screw and having sawtoothed edges l4 serving to seize and hold the work.- The head of the device it is mounted in a recess l 1 formed in the top surface of the top member I I Figure 10, and the stem I4 of the device I4 is threaded through a nut 31 countersunk in the bottom of the top member Ii and thence into the'left-hand wall 6. It is evident that this structure permits the lifting and lowering of the device M'by engagement thereof with a screw driver so as to provide a stop and seizure device of the height and character desired for the particular article being operated upon.
' It willbe evident that substantially the entire chamber formed between the base 5 and the top H serves as storage space fora set of tools and such findings as would be most suitable for use in a device of the character described. A part of this space is indicated by l8 between the left hand wall 6 and the drawer I5 in which several of'the larger desirable tools can be stored and transported and the balance of this space is occupied by the drawer l5 which, in part, is a compartment member for holding suitable findings such as screws, nails, nuts, bolts, etc.,,and, in part, provides a storage space for many smaller tools. Furthermore, the overhanging portions H and II of thetop Ilprovide space both on top and also below on the table support for the disposition, when working with the device, of tools that are temporarily laid aside or used non-continuously.
What I claim is:
1. A combination portable work bench and tool kit comprising a box-like structure having a work board cover and a plurality of spaced interior walls, and a miter-block removably mounted in the structure and forming both an exterior wall of the structure and a closure for an access opening thereinto, the interior walls forming stops positioning the miter-block.
2. In a combination portable work bench and tool kit having side and end walls, a base, and a removable work board cover, the sub-combination of a removable vise structure comprising an exterior jaw opposing a kit wall, the latter and the jaw forming a vise clamp, a partition block erected on the base adjacent said wall and also somewhat spaced from another and angular kit wall, the vise structure being slidable upon opposed faces of said block and said angular wall for removal from the kit through the cover opening, and means for actuating the vise clamp.
3. In a combination portable work bench and tool kit having side and end walls, a base, and a removable work board cover,'the sub-combination of a removable vise structure comprising an exterior jaw opposing a kit wall, the latter and the jaw forming a vise clamp, a partition block erected on the base adjacent said wall and also somewhat spaced from another and angular kit well, said block and said angular wall having opposed faces within the kit formed with opposed grooves extended toward the cover, the grooves being open-ended adjacent the cover, a block T- shaped in cross section whose arms'are slidably mounted in the respective grooves and whose intermediate leg is slidably mounted on, and in the space between, the angular wall and the block, a plug abutting the exterior face of the jaw, and an actuating handle mounted on the plug, the plug having an elongated stem extended through the jaw and having screw-threaded engagement with the T-shaped. block. 7 THOMAS E. OWENS.
