UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL \VARREN IVILCOX, OF MENDON, MASSACHUSETTS.
TUNING-PEG FOR VIOLINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,648, dated March 18, 1890.
Application filed November 25, 1889. Serial No. 331,436. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL WARRE WIL- COX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mendon, in the county of lVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tun in g-Pegs for Violins; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation; Figs. 2 and 3, longitudinal sections taken in planes at right angles to each other; and Fig. at, a transverse sect-ion of a violin tuning-peg made in accordance with my improvement, the nature of which is defined in the claim hereinafter presented.
The above figures represent the peg 011 an enlarged scale.
The tuning-peg hereinafter described is an improvement on that shown and described in Letters Patent No. 360,981, granted to me on April 12, 1887.
In the drawings, A denotes the handle portion of the peg, of which I) is the handle and c the shank projecting therefrom, which is formed to enter into and fit the socket to in a metallic sleeve 13, the latter being connected to the said shank by a pin d, extending diametrically through the shank and sleeve, as
represented. The exterior of the said sleeve is provided with conic frustums e and f, which taper in one and the same direction and are to enter correspondingly-shaped bearings in the neck of the violin, a cylindrical portion g, of smaller diameter than either of the said frustums and on which the string is to be wound, being arranged between said tapering portions.
Vithin thetubular interior of the sleeve and filling the same from the smaller end of said sleeve to and abutting against the end of the shank c of the handle, as shown, is a core 0, of wood or other suitable material, and passing diametrically through said core and sleeve is a pin 71, of wood or other suitable material, the ends of which are flush with the cylindrical exterior of the sleeve, said pin being glued or otherwise fixed to the core C, and is afterward bored longitudinally at '2' to receive the string.
The object in forming the sleeve B with the tubular interior, as shown, and filling it with the core 0 is to furnish a suitable support in which the pin h can be confined and securely held in position to furnish a bushing for the string-hole 7;, the edge of which will not cut the string, as the edge of said hole is apt to do when unprovided with the said bushing, as shown in the drawings of the patent before referred to.
Furthermore, by forming the frusta and string-bearing portion of the peg in one piece of metal and providing the handle portion with a shank to enter the socket therein and be fixed thereto, as shown, a much stronger and better peg than that referred to is produced.
lVhat I claim is- The improved violin tuning-peg, as described, consisting of the handle I), provided with the shank c, the sleeve B, having the frusta e and f both tapered in the same direction, also the string-bearing g between them and of less diameter than that of either of said frusta, the core C and bushing h, fixed thereto, arranged in the sleeve as shown, the shank of the handle being securely fixed in the socket of the sleeve, all as represented.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL IVARREN \VILCOX.
