ANDREW B GRAHAM .FHOTD UTMOVWASHINGTDYLDC UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARVIN Ii. ROIVE, OF ALBANY, NEIV YORK.
DENTAL DlSK-MANDREL.
$PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 560,047, dated May 12, 1896. Application filed February 13, 1896. Serial No. 579,191. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARVIN L. ROWE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Dental Disk-Mandrel; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My inventionwhas for its object to provide a mandrel capable of readily receiving and holding securely in position a polishing or cutting disk for dentists use. This I accomplish by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view, partly in section, of a mandrel embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, taken on line 1 1 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front View of a spiral flange. Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-section taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a vertical cross-section taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a side view of a spiral flange attached to a supporting-pin. Fig. 7 is aplan view of a serrated fin. The shank of the fin is shown in sectional view. Fig. 8 is a side view of spiral flange, polishing-disk, and end of mandrel.
All of the foregoing figures represent the several parts enlarged for the purpose of clearly illustrating their construction and mode of operation.
As illustrated in the drawings, the shank of the mandrel is composed of two sections A and A. The section A consists of a tube provided with a head B, from which project pins 1), preferably beveled or pointed at their ends. This section of the mandrel is also provided on its sides with longitudinal slots or openings a.
E represents a spiral flange supported upon a pin 0. This flange is preferably provided with holes 6, which register with the pins 1) of the head B, and a knob or point is formed at the central portion of the disk. A fin D, having its edges provided with teeth, is secured to the pin 0, and the toothed edges of the fin project from the lateral openings or slots 0, of the section A. The forward end of the section A of the mandrel is inserted bea formed on said section A. The thread of the sleeve engages the teeth of the fin D, so that when the sleeve is revolved the pin 0 is moved longitudinally with the fin D and the spiral flange E. A polishing-disk is secured to the mandrel by inserting the knob of the spiral flange E into the hole of the disk while the mandrel is revolved by the dental engine. The spiral edge of the flange cuts its way through the disk and forces the disk between the spiral flange E and the head B of the mandrel. Then by holding the sleeve F, as the mandrel is revolved by the engine, the screw-thread on the inner side of the sleeve F engages the teeth of the fin D and forces the pin C longitudinally and causes the pins 1) to pierce the disk and engage the holes 6 in the spiral flange E.
I do not desire to be limited to the specific construction herein shown of the several parts constituting my invention, especially those composing the main shank or body of the mandrel. In some instances I propose to use a shank of one integral piece instead of we sections, as herein shown, making one end or portion of such shank hollow, so as to form a tube, and forming side slots in said tube portion of the mandrel to hold the edges of the threaded fin D.
What I claim is In a disk-mandrel, the combination with a tube provided with lateral openings and a retaining-head having extending pins, of a longitudinally-movable pin provided on one end with a spiral flange having holes registering with the pins of the retaining-head, and on the other end with a toothed fin, and an inwardly-threaded sleeve engaging the teeth of said fin, substantially as shown and described. 7
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' MARVIN L. ROIVE.
