E. E. BLAKES-LEE. PENCIL SHARPBNBR.
Patented Feb. 18, 1890,

v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD E. BLAKESLEE, OF BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR TO THE EAGLE PENOI COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PENCIL-SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 421,810, dated February 18, 1890.
Application filed November 4, 1889. Serial No. 329,139. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD E. BLAKESLEE, of Brooklyn, New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pencil-Shapeners, of which the following is a specification.
The pencil-Sharpener in which my invention is embodied comprises, essentially, a pencil-holder in combination with a longitudinally-moving knife-carrier having a knife and a bed or point-support arranged opposite to each other as jaws, so as to be capable of movement toward each other, or toward the end of the pencil, which may project between them.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan, Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal central section, of the sharpener. Fig. 4 is a view of the knife-carrier detached.
A is the pencil-holder, consisting of a tube, (preferably of sh`eet metah) split for a portion of its length at lthe end where the pencil is inserted, and having on this portion a sliding ring a for clamping the inserted pencil in place. The knife-carrieris mounted on and can slide lengthwise of the pencilholder. It consists, in the present instance, of aring B, (which may, if desired, be a sleeve or tube,) loosely encircling the pencil-holder and having a range of movement determined by the front and rear annular ribs b on the holder, and of two longitudinal flexible arms C D,`placed opposite each other, the one O forminga holder for the knife E, and the other D fashioned as a concave bed for the support of the point of the pencil against the pressure of the knife. The knife may be secured to its holder in various ways. In the present instance it is removably connected therewith by fitting in side guides c in the holder, with .its heel or rear end pressed back against. the ring B. The carrier; under the arrangement described, is jointed to the pencil-holder so that it may both tilt bodily and rotate and move lengthwise independently ofthe holder; but this feature in a pencilsharpeneris not of my invention, broadly considered, and is not claimed by me. The tilting, indeed, is not indispensable to my invention.`
The operation of the Sharpener will be uny, derstood by reference to Fig. 3 of the drawings. Vhen the knife-carrier is in its rearmost position, the edge of the knife will be just a little beyond the front end of the pencilholder. The pencil P is inserted in the holder far enough to cause its front end to project beyond the front end of the holder a distance which ought not to exceed the range of longitudinal movement of the carrier, and 6o is clamped in that position. Vhen this has been done, then by taking the holder in one hand and the carrier in the other, pressing together the parts O D gently upon the pencil and reciprocating and at the same time turning the carrier, the point of the pencil, by suitable regulation of the pressure upon the knife C and bed D, will be gradually tapered and sharpened until it reaches the condition represented in Fig. l3, in which gure 7o the carrier is represented as advanced and with its knife and bed closed upon the point of the pencil.
Having described my invention and the manner in which the same is or may be carried into effect, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A pencil-Sharpener comprising a pencilholder, together with a knife-carrier, which is mounted to rotate and vto slide longitudi- 8o nally upon said holder, and is provided with arms placed opposite to and movable (asjaws) toward and away from each other, one of said arms constituting a support or bed for the point of the pencil and the other having attached to it the knife, substantiallyas and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this lst'day of November, 1889.
EDWARD E. BLAKESLEE.
