SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 421,665, dated February 18, 1890.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ABRAHAM BUCHMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oriole, in the county of Somerset and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pickers forBerries, Fruits, &c., which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawing.

My invention relates to an improvement in devices for picking berries, fruits, &c., the same being attachable to either finger of the human hand; and it consists of a sheath or covering for the end of the finger, a projecting portion to form an artificial nail, and means for securing the sheath in position, as will be more fully hereinafter set forthi The figure of the drawing represents a perspective View of a picker for berries, fruits, &c., in position, embodying my invention.

Referring to the drawing, A designates a sheath, which is fitted over the end of a thumb or finger of the human hand, and having a projecting piece B, substantially of the shape of a finger-nail and acting as a cutter or claw.

0 represents jointed links or toggles, the forward ends of which are secured to the sides of the sheath A, and at the'rear ends to a collar or band D, the latter being adapted to embrace the finger behind the first joint thereof, the connecting pivots of the links of said toggles occupying positions adjacent to the sides of the knuckles of said joint, so that the device may conform to the movement of the finger.

One end of the band or collar D is formed with a hook or stud E and the other end with holes F to receive said stud, thus making the collar adjustable for application to fingers of 40 different sizes. g

It will be seen that when the device is in position on the hand the finger may be operated in such manner that the piece or nail B readily picks or cuts off berries, fruit, &c., to which it is presented, the sheath relieving the finger and nail from contact therewith and preventing injury to the same during the picking operation. I

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A picker for berries, fruit, the, consist ing of a sheath for the end of a finger, an

artificial nail connected with said sheath, a

fastening collar or band, and links or toggles connecting said sheath and band, substan tially as described.

2. A picker for berries, fruit, &c., consisting of a sheath for the end of a finger, an artificial nail secured to said sheath, and a collar or band connected to said sheath by links and having devices for adjusting the diameter of said collar, substantially as de scribed. 3. A picker for berries, (9170., consisting of the sheath A, having a projecting piece B and provided with an adjustable collar D, having pins E and openings F, and the pivoted links 0, connecting said sheath and col- 7o lar, said parts being combined substantially as described.
