' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
` HARRY S. MILES AND FREDERICK IIAAS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BINDING FOR BooKs.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 421,595, dated February 18, 189C). Appiiciiioii nea April 17, 1889. sein No. 307,565. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern;
Be it known that we, HARRY S. MILES and FREDERICK HAAs, both citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bindings for Books; and we do hereby declare the following to be'a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
4Our invention relates to an improvementin bindings for blank-books, and has for its object to increase the flexibility and strength of the binding, and at the same time to enable a book to be bound in such manner as to have a uniform thickness throughout, thereby insuring ease of action in opening and closing the same and its durability in use.
y This particularinvention is designed as an improvement upon our United States Patent No. 391,810, granted October 30, 1888, wherein certain details of construction and combination of parts are varied or added.
The novel features of our invention are clearly described hereinafter, and pointed'out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view showing our invention as applied to two leaf-sections of a book, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical transverse section showing the relation of the binding to four instead of two leaf-sections. x
Like letters of reference refer to like or corresponding parts in both views of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings by letter, and more particularly to Fig. 1,A and B, respectively, represent two sections of leaves (leafsections) of a blank-book or other volume, the back of each section A or B being folded or turned at ct in the usual manner.
C designates a strip of some material, of the desired dimensions and shape, folded in the manner shown in Fig. l and more fully described hereinafter. This strip C is of any durable and iieXible Inaterial-sucl1 as muslin or linen-'Land serves the dual purpose of a connecting medium between the leaf-sections and as a backing for the facing D,which latter is made of thick material-vsuch as paper-and is secured to and is approximately co-extensive with the outer surface of the sides of the stems or Wings h b of each strip C, as will be better understood from the following: The strip C is first formed into an inverted-U shape, and the portions of the stems or wings b b immediately adjacent to their point of union c are inserted up between the backs of the two leaf-sections A B. (See Fig. l.) Then the stem or wing b, adjacent to the leaf-section A, is pasted or otherwise secured to the base of the leaf-section A, as shown, thus leaving both the stem b and that portion of stem b which projects out be* low the base of the leaf-sections free. Now, the two leaf-sections A B and the connectingstrip C are sewed together in the'manner or dinarily employed, and the free depending stems or wings b b are 'expanded or opened and folded in the manner shown in Fig. l.
Then the backing D is fastened to the stems b h', so as to conform to the manner in which the latter are folded, as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2. Each stem or wing b or b consists of two portions d d', the portion d extending from the point of union cto the pointe, while the portion d extends substantially parallel with CZ from the point e upwardly. In'other words, each stem or wingv b or b is folded or turned at c, thus forming a U-shaped stem or branch b or b.
, As shown in Fig. 2, there is one connecting strip C for every two adjacent leaf-sections, and the several pairs of leaf-sections are secured together serially or successively by the folded extremities of the stems or wings b b of the connectingstrips C G in the following manner: In Fig. 2 the portion d of the stem or wing h of one strip C is inserted up intermediately between the portion d of the stem b and the portion CZ of the stem b of the other strip C, thus interlocking or dovetailing the two strips C O together. This mode of connection between adjacent strips C C is preserved throughout, and the total number of strips C C are sewed together inthe ordinary manner, and are then bound as is usual. The function of the strip C, folded in the manner shown, is to enable leaf-sections to be readily and iiexibly joined, and at the same time serves as a support for the thick backing D, which latter is provided in order to render IOO the thickness of the back or binding` equal to that of the leaf-sections.
Having thus fully described our invention, what We claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The oo1nbination,\vith two leaf-sections, such as A B, of a exible connecting-strip, such as C, having expanded stems b Z9', divided into two portions d d and secured to a leaf-section at or near the point of union of said stems b b', and a baoking,sueh as D, secured to the surface of one side of the strip C and approximately eo-extensiveyvith andA conforming to the contour of the surface of the expanded stems b b.
2. The co1nbination,\vithtvvo connecting'- strips, snoh as C, each secured to a ieaf-seetion and comprising two stems l) b', eonverg ing at c, and each stem b orbf consist-ing of two portions d CZ', of a backing, sueh as D, Secured to eaeh of the said strips C C and conforming in shape and dimensions with that of its strip, the said two strips C C and HARRY S. MILES.
FREDERICK HAAS.
