IMLPROVEM ENT IN SEWING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 42, [49, dated March 29, 1864.

Be it known that I, HENRY '1. STAINS, of

Scotts\'ille,in the county of Huntingdon'and' State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sewing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is. a full, clear, and exact. description of the same,

reference beinghad to theaccompanying'draw- 1859, or any other similar stitching device, in

proper position over an adjustable table, in such a manner that said stitching device can be used as a stationary sewing-machine. The stitching device of Henry Hudson consists essentially of a fiat plate of sheet metal or other suitable material, provided with a vertical arborand cams to impart motion to two needles, and with a curvedfoot; and theorigiiial idea of the invention, as described in the patent above referred to, has been to produce a self-feeding automatic stitch-forming device which can be carried or will carry itself over the stretched or stationary fabric. 1n experimenting with his machine I found that the same could be used with advantage as an ordinary sewing-machine, in which the stitching device remains stationary and the fabric is fed along by the action of the machine. With this object in view I have constructed a clamp and table which forms the subject of this present improvement, and which will be readily understood from the following description.

The fabric or material to be stitched is supf ported by a table, F, which is provided with an arm, G, fitting on a square stud, H. This stud is firmly secured to the bed-plate B, and a set-screw, a, passing through the end of the arm G, serves to adjust the table'at any desired height. I

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I V The employment or use of a standard, A,
