Description

F: ZUCHETTI.
Cloth Guide for Sewing Machines.
Patnted Dec. 19, 1865.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FERDINANDO ZUOHETTI, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTH-GUIDES FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 51,645, dated December 19, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINANDO ZUOHE'ITI, ofi the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Gage for Sewing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
This invention relates to a gage for sewingmachines, which is adjustable on an arm extending from the resser-foot or from the bar to which the presser-foot is secured, and is composed of a supporting-piece and a hinged guide, which is adjustable up and down in such a manner that a gage is obtained which can easily be regulated according to the width of the seam and according to the thickness of the material passing through under it, and which rises and falls with the presser-foot, so as to cause no resistance to the feed-motion of the material to be sewed. The presser-footis provided with a friction-roller, which bears down upon the material to be sewed, and thereby the motion of said material under the presserfoot is facilitated.
A represents the presser'foot of a sewingmachine, which is secured to the upright bar a by a set-screw, or any other suitable means, in the ordinary manner. That portion of the presser-foot which bears down upon the material to be sewed is armed with a roller, 0, whereby the friction caused by said material passing through under the foot is reduced.
From the presser-foot, and at right angles to the same, extends an arm, (1, which is made square or polygonahand which forms the guide for the gage B. A set-screw, 6, serves to adjust this gage according to the width of the seam to be sewed, and it is composed of a supporting-bar, f, and a hinged guide, g. The portion of this hinged guide is regulated by a set-screw, h, and in sewing it is so arranged that it bears down upon the cloth-plate of the sewing-machine, or, if two pieces of cloth or other material are to be sewed together, in a certain line upon the lowest piece of cloth, thus forming an abutment against which the edge of the upper cloth is held in sewing.
The gage itself being connected to the presser-foot, rises and falls with the same, and adjusts itself to the varying thickness thereof, and the hinged guide 9 can also be adjusted so that it bears down either upon the clothplate or upon the lowest piece of the material to be sewed, and a guide is obtained which is at once convenient, easily adjusted, and capable of being used for a great variety of work. What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A gage for a sewing-machine, composed of a supporting bar, f, and hinged adjustable guide g, in combination with an arm, 01, extending from the presser-foot A, substantially as and for the purpose described.
