This application is a division of applica- The object of the invention is to provide novel and improved means for adjusting the bender which bends the work into position for the passage of the needle therethrough, and to this end the invention comprises the features of construction and cominations of parts hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.
The invention will be readily understood from an inspection of the accompanying drawings and the following detailed description of the mechanism illustrated therein.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an end elevation showing so much of a buttonhole finishing machine as isnecesasry to illustrate the application of the present invention thereto, and Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views showing the bender adjusting mechanism.
In the drawings the invention is shown as embodied in a buttonhole finishing machine having the same general construction and mode of operation as the machine shown and described in Patent No. 1,080,341, dated December 2,- 1918. In this machine the sewing mechanism comprises a horizontally reciprocating and laterally movable needle 2 and a coiiperating shuttle i. The work is supported on a work support 6 above the path of the needle, and prior to each reciprocation of the needle is forced downward by a bender 8 into a recess 10 to bring a fold in the work into the needle path.

The bender is clamped in adjusted position by a clamping screw 18. The knurled head on the upper end of the bender is in the form of a split nut which is threaded on to the end of the screw and is secured in position by a clamping screw 20. With this construction the split nut may be so adjusted on the screw that it will strike the boss on the bender arm when the bender is in the lowest position in which it will cooperate properly with the needle. The knurled head may thus act as a stop for him-- iting the downward adjustment of the bender. When once adjusted, it is secured permanently in position by its clamping screw, which may be sealed or otherwise secured against improper release if found desirable.
While it is preferred to employ the specific construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, it will be understood that this construction and arrangement is not essential to the broader features of the invention, and may be varied o-r modified as found desirable or best suited to the construction of the machine in which the invention is to be embodied.
Having explained the nature and object of the invention, and specifically described one form of mechanism in which it may be embodied, what is claimed is 1. A sewing machine, having, in combination, a work support, a bender, an arm on which the bender is mounted, a screw for adjusting the bender, and a split nut secured to the upper end of the screw to form a head by which the screw is manipulated in adjusting the bender.
