B. S. GLOVER. STAND 0R HOLDER FOR ALBUMS.
No. 421,267; Patented Feb 11, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELI S. GLOVER, OF BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN.
STAND OR HQLDER Foe ALBUMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 421,267, dated February 11, 1890.
Application filcd June 5, 1889. $en'a1 No. 313,238. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may OOH-067721.
Be it known that I, ELI S. GLOVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Battle Creek, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Stand or Holder for Albums and other Books,
bindings of the album where used without such independent protection and support.
It is a further object of this invention to so construct the stand and book or album holder that it shall furnish a convenient sup.- port for a dictionary, album, bible, or other book at all times when at rest or in use, and whether on a table or as constituting an independent article of furniture, substantially as hereinafter appearing.
My present invention consists further in a novel arrangement and association of parts whereby the book or album is removably se* cured to the stand or holder and adapted to be used on the floor as an independent article of furniture or in connection with a table or desk, and also whether the said album or book is bound with pages and pictures disposed parallel with the back of the book or at a right anglc thereto, as will hereinafter appear.
, In the drawings, wherein like letters and figures of reference designate similar parts in all the views, Figure 1 represents my new album and book holderin perspective, as adapted to stand on a table or desk with the open album resting in its extended arms. Fig. 2 is a side view of the top part thereof with the book removed, showing the set scrcw a. (See Fig. 6.)
Fig. 3 is a front view of the same, with a Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the book or album case without leaves, having suitable covers and a flexible back for the purpose of holding and protecting the book itself from injury, as well ing the same in that form of book and album where the pages and pictures are placed at a right angle to the album-back. Fig. 6 is a side view of the top thereof, having the same sort of book in its grasp open, and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the same with the book or album protecting case A closed, showing recesses z i, for purposes hereinafter more clearly to appear. Fig. 9 shows the manner of construction where the centralsupportingshaft 0 is arranged horizontally, as in Figs. 5, 6, and 7 and Fig. 10 is a perspective view of the thimble or tube catch-lock attachment device for removably connecting the book or album case A or the album or book cover A to the said central shaft 0 and engaging devices described; aud Fig. 11 gives a similar view, enlarged, of the album or case clasp d for engagement of the album or book cover with the inwardly bent outer extremities of the book-supporting arms D D for supporting and holding the album.
Referring to the letters of the drawings, A represents an ordinary album, and A shows what I shall designate a book or album case as distinguished from an ordinary book or al bum cover, and consists of its two sides provided with a flexible back consisting of a series of strips of metal K, hinged together, as shown in my patents, Nos. 222,033 and 243,772, for which the present invention is specially adapted, or wherever any flexible material'is employed, so that the end attained shall be substantially as herein designated. namely, to serve as a book and album holder and protector, wherein B is the body, G the base, and l) the top of the said holder. These elements comprise the stand and frame, as adapted to rest on a table or desk, and, with the extension rod or support H, constitute a new and independent article of furniture suitable for standing on the floor, and to also be carried in the hand by its convenient extension-rod and placed in any desired position in the room.
. The top I) of the holder is provided with a depending journal Z), which rotates on a vertical axis in the top of the base B or rod H, where it is removably held by means of the thumb-screw h or h and an annular recess h in the holder-journal, as seen in' the several views.
In applying my present invention to the oblong album, so called, (see Fig. 1,) and other books the pictures and pages whereof are placed parallel with the back, the central book-supporting shaft 0 is fixed at a convenient angle for reading and display, as seenin Figs. 1,2, 3, and 8, while for thatform of album and book having pictures and pages disposed at a right angle to the back of the book I place the said supporting-shaft in a horizontal position, as seen in Figs. 5, 6, 7, and 9. In either form the two or more parts I) and b of the top or book-holder may be made of a single casting, the form and mode of construction being a mere matter of taste and cost.
The shaft 0 is secured to the holder 1) or its brace b by the screws 5 s, or in any other suitable way, while the book, album, or case detachably engages the said shaft by the novel method and devices now to be described, and particularly pointed out, as follows:
Thimbles or tube catch-locks e, provided with alongitudinal projection c and an intermediate slot 6 loosely embrace the shaft 0, while the ends of the book cover or albumback engage with said slot by the passing of the projecting part e over the ends of the cover and between the central leaves or hinges, as the case may be, whereby the book, album, or protecting-case is securely held and adjusted at all times, and under all circumstances effectually securing the album, book, and household furniture from the possible wear and defacement as has been frequently caused by the various devices heretofore employed.
\Vhere the case A, Figs. 4 and 7, is used, the back whereof is of metal hinges, the same should be covered with a flexible lining m or an elastic material to protect the inclosed book. (See Figs. at and 7.)
Below the central support of the lower end of the book-supporting shaft 0 and equidistant therefrom on either side are situated the perforations (Z (Z, (see Fig. 1,) in which the right-angled inner ends of the book-supporting arms D D engage, while their outer oppositely-bent extremities en gage with the albu n1- cover or case-clasps d 61 Fig. 1.
WVhen the book is open, the arms D D open outward and move downwardly to a nearly horizontal position, reaching rests provided on the right and left side of the plate-top of the rotating part 1), as seen in Fig. 1, while when the book is closed the said arms find a rest in the semicircular recesses t' 'L', which serve to prevent injury to the album-cover by the accidental fall of one or both sides thereof while reading the book or displaying the album-leaves.
Where the shaft C is in a horizontal position, as in Figs. 5, 6, 7, and 9,1 sometimes hinge one or both of the arms D on the center of shaft 0, having the opposite ends of the said arms engage with convenient staples d on the outside of case A, or simply have the book sides kept closed by means of the ordinary album=clasp, though I prefer to pivot one arm to the knob or top of frame I) in its central part and hinge the opposite one to the shaft, as seen in Fig. 6.
Having thus fully described and illustrated my invention and pointed out its mode of operation, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In an album or book holder having a base and socket with thumb screw at its top, a supporting-frame having a depending journal adapted to rotate in said socket and held in place by said thumb-screw, a central shaft removably secured to said frame and carrying thimble catch-locks for engagement with the ends of-the case or book-cover, outwardlyswinging arms pivot-ed. to said frame at their inner ends, and their outermost extremities provided with the book-cover engaging sup ports or clasp, substantially as shown and set forth.
2. In an album or book holder having a base and suitable socket with thumb-screw at its top, the extension-standard H, provided with a suitable socket and thumb-screw atits top and its bottom end fitted to and engag ing with the socket and thumb screw of the base, a book-supporting frame engaging with and adapted to rotate in the socket of the standard and removably secured thereto by means of a thumb or set screw, the said frame carrying a central shaft having adjustable catch-locks or thimbles, outwardly-swinging arms whose inner ends are pivoted to the said frame, and outermost extremities carrying book-supporting clasps for engagement with the book cover, substantially as shown, illus= t-rated, and described.
3. In an album or book holder, the base B, provided with socket and thu1nbscrew h", the
IIG
rotating frame I), provided With the adj ustable and removable shaft 0, carrying catchlocks e, outwardly-swingin g arms D D, pivoted at their inner ends to the frame Z) and their outermost extremities provided With the bookcover or case-supporting clasps d substant-ially as shown, and for the purposes set forth.
provided with socket and set-screw 7L,rotating frame 17, having adjustable and removable book-supporting shaft 0, carrying catchloek e, fixed side portions of said frame form ing ledges or horizontal stops 0 C and a Vertical central Wall C for engagement as stops for the arms D D, the said arms pivoted at their inner ends to the frame I) on either side of said central Wall, and their opposite ex-- tremities provided with the book and cover clasps 01 substantially as shown and described.
In Witness that I claim the foregoing I hereunto set my hand this 9th day of April, 1889.
