SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 420,207, dated January 28, 1890.

Application filed February 27, 1889- Serial No. 301,374. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN L. MURPHY, of Montgomery, in the county of Le Sueur and State of Minnesota, have invented certain Improvements in Coat and Hat Hooks, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide an improved hook formed from a single piece of wire; and the invention consists, generally, in the construction hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In hooks of similar design heretofore constructed there is a lack of stiffness and strength to withstand a side blow or strain, as they have no lateral support.

By my improvement this defect is remedied and a light, cheap, and strong hook secured, capable, when screwed into its support, of withstanding a severe strain downward or laterally.

In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved hook. Fig. 2 is a rear end elevation, and- Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same.

The hook is formed of a single piece of wire, one end of which is threaded to form the screwpoint 1. The main stem 3 is in line with the screw-point 1. The end of the stem 3 joins the loop 5, and from the loop 5 the wire extends downward and backward and then forward, forming the loop 7. The wire is then extended upward at right angles to the stem 3, forming the upright stem 11. From the top of the stem 11 the wire is extended laterally and carried around the stem 3, forming the two laterally-projecting loops 9, extending at right angles to the stem 3. The end of the wire is then carried around the stem 3. The stem 11 rests against the wall or woodwork, onto which the threaded end 1 is screwed, and the loops 9 also rest against the same surface. The stem 11 forms abrace for the hook on the under side of the stem 3, while the loops 9 form lateral braces for the stem on its opposite sides. By this means the stem is firmly braced laterally, and is thereby prevented from being bent to either side, to which, owing to the small size of the stem 3, it would otherwise be liable.

I claim as my invention The herein-described coat and hat hook formed from a single piece of wire and comprising the main stem 3, the upwardly-extending loops 5 and 7, and the elongated loops 9, lying above and below and on opposite sides of the main stem 3, back from the end thereof, so as to form by said single loop a bearing around all sides of the main stem, as shown, and for the purposes set forth.
