To all whom it may concern:-

Be it known that I, LOUIS PHILIPP KNOLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montrose, in the county of Susquehanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head-Rests for Barbers and Dentists Chairs, of which the following is a full and clear description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my new head-rest with a portion of the side detached to expose the spring. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line X X of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents the inside of the bottom plate with the spring removed. Fig. 4 shows the rest when used solid.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the exact manner in which I have carried it out.

The object of my present invention is to furnish an elastic head-rest for barbers and dentists chairs which will permit the head of the occupant to roll in any direction, or be solid when desired by the operator; and it consists in the combination and arrangement of the several devices hereinafter described and claimed.

The body of my head-rest consists of two plates A and B, constructed of metal or other suitable material and of suitable dimensions for the head of the person occupying the chair to conveniently and comfortably rest upon it. Between these two plates and at or near their center I place the coil-spring O, the diameter of which is nearly equal to the width of the plates. In each of these plates,

immediately above and below the spring, is a groove D, and within these grooves are placed the end coils of the spring, the spring being held in position by the grooves inwhich they rest, and the flexible material F connecting the two parts together. It is evident from this description of my improved elastic headrest, the coil-spring being placed centrally between the two main plates, that the rest will roll or rock in any and all required directions to suit the convenience of the operator. I socure all around the rest a strip of some suitable fabric F,which will readily yield to pressure on the rest and at the same time control and limit the action of the spring.

To render the elastic rest readily convertible into a solid rest, as frequently required by dentists, I place a hook at on each end of one of the plates and the eye I) on each end of the opposite plate, so that by simply pressing the plates together and attaching the hooks to the eyes the rest is rendered solid.

My new head-rest may be attached to the chair by any convenient and well known means, so as to be quickly raised or lowered.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In an elastic head-rest, the groovedplates A and B, in combination with the centrallylocated coiled spring 0, the flexible fabric F, the hooks a on the ends of one plate, and eyes I) on the ends of the opposite plate, all constructed and combined substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
